Record air freight volumes in Hong Kong

Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals (Hactl, which handles close to 80% of the cargo at Hong Kong International Airport) reported record volume last month. And not just by a whisker, but by a considerable margin: Hactl’s June volume of 245,000 tonnes was up 30.5% over June 2009, and up 11.1% over the previous record of 220,000 tonnes set in June 2008.For the first half of 2010, Hactl’s handle was up 38.4% to 1.39 million tonnes. This is also an all-time record for the first-half of a year, well up from the 1.28 million tonnes handled in 1H08.

The airport’s other major handler, Asia Airfreight Terminal, also reported an amazing surge, with its June handle up 56% over June 2009, and its first-half handle up 51% over 1H09.

  1. Hactl just published its July results, and once again broke all records. Hactl handled more cargo in all three categories (export, import, and transshipment) than in any previous July, and it’s y-t-d total through July was also a record — 10% above the pre-recession high point in 2008.
