LAS Cargo looks to Classics, NGs to modernize 727-200F fleet

(Photo: LAS Cargo)[/caption] Colombia-based LAS Cargo is looking to 737NG conversions to renew its fleet of 727-200Fs. The carrier told Cargo Facts it plans to introduce two 737-800Fs in 2021, with both expected to begin conversion in the second half of next year. While not exactly a one-to-one replacement for the 727s, LAS Cargo said the 737 platform was its best choice based on crewing and performance, taking into account the high altitude of its base in Bogota (BOG). LAS Cargo has already begun the transition to 737s; in 2019 it took a 737-300F (29334, ex-Latin American Wings) on financial lease and said it expects to take delivery of another in 2021. That aircraft (28569, ex-Latin American Wings) was recently sold by Aergo Capital to South Africa-based Star Air Cargo, along with another sister ship (28869), and will soon undergo conversion. In the meantime, LAS Cargo confirmed to Cargo Facts it continues to operate four 727-200Fs (21427, 22609, 22927, and 22928) but plans to begin phasing them out mid-2021. LAS Cargo, which currently flies on an ACMI basis for DHL and Cubana, said it envisions growth in the ACMI segment as part of its strategic plan for the next few years, particularly given the strength of the e-commerce and pharmaceutical businesses. 737 Classics remain popular in regions such as Latin America; fellow Colombian cargo carrier AerCaribe recently added its fourth 737-400F in early October. In parallel with the fleet modernization, privately held LAS is also reorganizing its corporate management structure. Earlier this year Frederik Jacobsen, the former CEO of Tampa Cargo, joined LAS to assume the role of CEO.
