Taiwan’s combination carriers post record cargo revenues in August

Taiwan-based China Airlines and EVA Air posted $363 million and $253 million respectively in cargo revenue in August 2021 — their highest ever since at least 2013, according to monthly statistics released by the two airlines. China Airlines and EVA Air also continued to see monthly cargo traffic levels that were higher compared to in 2019, at 672 million and 426 million FTKs, respectively. In the case of China Airlines, the figure was another record since at least 2013, helped in part by its fleet of eighteen 747-400Fs and three 777Fs, as well as cargo-only flights with its 777-300ERs, A350-900s and A330-300s. (Photo/EVA Air)[/caption] Most major combination carriers in the Asia-Pacific region generally made modest improvements to their month-on-month capacity as they continued a gradual recovery. China Airlines’ cargo capacity increased by 2.3% MoM, while Singapore Airlines reported capacity that was nearly flat MoM (+0.02%). Hong Kong-based Cathay Pacific grew its capacity by 9.3% from July 2021. The carrier recorded 783 million FTKs in August 2021, a 3.9% increase from last month but still 15.4% lower compared to August 2019. Chief Customer and Commercial Officer Ronald Lam said in a release that the airline’s freighter operations have been at peak levels since late-August. Cathay has now introduced additional passenger-freighter capacity in the form of two reconfigured 777-300ERs, for a total of six. Cathay modified its first two 777-300ERs last summer and has kept its passenger-freighter fleet small relative to carriers like Korean Air, which reconfigured ten 777-300ERs and six A330-300s, and EVA Air, which began flying a reconfigured 777-300ER in June 2020 and said in its 2020 annual report that it would completely remove the seats from thirteen 777-300ERs. However, China Southern Airlines and Air China both suffered double-digit drops in capacity, at 31.8% and 21.1% compared to July 2021, respectively. In August, the Chinese authorities imposed restrictions on operations at Shanghai’s Pudong International Airport in an attempt to contain a COVID-19 outbreak in one of the cargo areas there, resulting in the cancellation of flights by multiple carriers .
