Wingcopter, Continental Drones to deploy 12K drones in Africa by 2027

German drone company Wingcopter and Continental Drones, a subsidiary of Ghana- and Dubai-based Atlantic Trust Holding, are partnering to deploy 12,000 drones in Africa to transport health care products, delivering medicine, vaccines and laboratory samples throughout the continent starting in early 2023. The full deployment will occur over the next five years. Continental Drones will distribute Wingcopter 198 drones to governments, government agencies and private enterprises, a Wingcopter spokesman told Air Cargo World. [caption id="attachment_57065365" align="alignright" width="474"] Photo / Wingcopter[/caption] The Wingcopter 198 can carry up to 6 kg and fly up to 110 km, according to the company’s website. The drone comes equipped with eight motors, eight electronic speed controllers (ESCs), and two batteries along with automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast (ADS-B), collision avoidance technology FLARM and remote identification. The partnership aims to build a new transport framework in the region, with drone technology transporting shipments quickly to rural areas, according to the release. The project also does not require large infrastructure because the Wingcopter 198 has vertical takeoff and landing capabilities, making a 5-by-5-meter landing pad sufficient, the spokesman said. Wingcopter has several endeavors in the health care sector, and in April 2021 began trials using electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft in partnership with ANA Holdings to develop a delivery network for pharma products . The drone company also works with Spright, a subsidiary of U.S. air medical service provider Air Methods, to deliver cargo between hospitals and laboratories and has its own project in Malawi delivering emergency supplies, medicines, medical equipment and COVID-19 vaccines from Wingcopter drone hubs to rural health care facilities, according to the spokesman.
