DHL Express relocates facility near SAN

DHL Express recently relocated from its current warehouse space in San Diego to a 86,000-square-foot facility near San Diego International Airport (SAN), more than doubling its handling capacity in an effort to accommodate increasing volumes. “International shipment growth required us to move to a much larger facility that could manage the increased volumes,” a DHL Express spokesperson told Air Cargo World . The $22 million facility — which is roughly 60,000 square feet larger than DHL’s previous facility — is equipped with technology and amenities to enable the warehouse to handle greater volumes at a higher speed, improving first-stop deliveries by 40%, the spokesperson said. This includes a new horseshoe belt that runs faster than the previous single belt; 12 dock doors versus the initial four; 83 parking spots for vehicle loading and unloading; six conveyor belts instead of one for loading and unloading; and 10 warehouse scanners that connect to the DHL network. Photo/DHL[/caption] The facility will also feature dedicated areas for handling non-conveyable shipments and dangerous goods, and newly updated material handling equipment that can process up to 6,000 pieces per hour. The SAN facility will handle U.S. domestic and time-definite international shipments, according to the release, will introduce electric vehicles (EV), and has already installed EV charging systems throughout the space. Further, it is on track toward a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification which acts as a framework for “healthy, efficient, carbon and cost-saving green buildings." SAN handled around 9,982 tonnes of cargo in July, down 10.4% year over year, according to the latest traffic statistics. Year to date, the airport has handled 72,555 tonnes of cargo, down 5.2% YoY. DHL invests in global growth The San Diego service center is the latest in a series of facility investments from DHL across the globe this year. In June DHL Global Forwarding invested roughly $12 million into a new 4,880-square-foot facility near Brisbane Airport (BNE) in Australia that will feature a new cold chain facility. That warehouse is expected to be completed in 2023. Also in June, DHL Express relocated its facilities in central Virginia to a $7 million investment near Richmond International Airport (RIC) . Meanwhile in the U.K., DHL eCommerce Solutions recently invested $668 million in its e-commerce branch DHL Parcel UK to expand infrastructure near Coventry Airport (CVT) in England . More recently in August, DHL Supply Chain announced plans to expand its pharmaceutical footprint near Frankfurt Airport (FRA) with a new 32,000-square-meter life sciences and health care facility.
