DB Schenker reduces freighter frequency

Logistics giant DB Schenker has reduced the number of flights on its own-controlled freighter network amid softening airfreight demand, but the flights remain an integral part of the company’s air cargo strategy. The Germany-based company is operating 48 flights per week globally, down 58 flights weekly, a DB Schenker spokesperson told Air Cargo World, without disclosing which routes were cut. [caption id="attachment_95376" align="alignright" width="304"] Photo courtesy of Lufthansa Cargo[/caption] More capacity is coming into the market, and consumer demand has weakened due to high inflation, but the carrier’s global flights are “a future-proof pillar,” said Asok Kumar, DB Schenker’s executive vice president and head of global air freight. “The capacity-demand imbalance has started to correct, and we need to keep a close eye on the market and adapt accordingly,” Kumar added. Extensive network DB Schenker’s extensive, own-freighter network operates out of several airports in Europe: Frankfurt (FRA); Frankfurt Hahn (HHN); Munich (MUC); Luxembourg (LUX); Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS); and Liege (LGG) to destinations in the U.S. such as New York (JFK); Chicago O’Hare (ORD); Chicago Rockford (RFD); Indianapolis (IND); Atlanta (ATL) and Miami (MIA). Flights from MIA extend to Sao Paulo (VCP and GRU) and onward connections to Buenos Aires (EZE) and Santiago (SCL). DB Schenker’s flights from Europe also operate to Mumbai (BOM); Seoul (ICN); Beijing (PEK); Shanghai (PVG); Zhengzhou (CGO); Wuhan (WUH); Hong Kong (HKG) and Taipei (TPE), as well as Singapore (SIN) which connects with Sydney (SYD). The network also includes trans-Pacific routings: ORD/RFD-ICN-PVG-RFD; TPE-ORD and HKG-RFD. “The supply-demand imbalance remains in favor of demand, but that gap is closing,” Kumar said. “Yields are higher than pre-COVID but coming down because consumer demand is dropping.” DB Schenker will continue to deploy its charters despite more capacity returning to the market in the form of bellyhold space on passenger aircraft as international air travel picked up again after the pandemic, he said. “Our own flight operations, which were enhanced during COVID, will continue to be our forte,” Kumar added.
