The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will implement a new policy regarding the screening of large and unique cargo shipments starting Nov. 1.

The regulation is in line with standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization, which requires 100% screening of all air cargo.

In the latest edition of the “On Air with Air Cargo Next” podcast, Steve Alterman, president of the Cargo Airline Association discusses the challenges of the policy, why this is happening now, as well as how it will affect shipments moving forward.

“[The industry] has to get these things screened, because that’s the standard, which we’ve agreed to,” Alterman said. “But we understand [the] problem. And so [TSA will give] temporary exemptions till the end of October of this year. Then they’re not granting any exceptions anymore. And [they’ll] work with [shippers] in an attempt to figure out how these things can move.”
