Swissport DUS Cargo to rely on Cargospot

Newly formed Swissport DUS Cargo Services will implement Cargospot, a digital operations and terminal management system, and gradually introduce other technologies to its operations. (Photo/DUS)[/caption] Swissport DUS Cargo Services began operations Thursday, following an agreement between Swissport Deutschland and Dusseldorf Airport (DUS) to form the joint cargo venture. Ground handling provider Swissport acquired a 74.9% stake in Flughafen Dusseldorf Cargo , the cargo handling unit at the airport. “By contractual agreement, we cannot disclose information on the costs of the joint venture,” Swissport spokesperson Tamara Suknovic told Air Cargo Next . Going digital Swissport plans to strengthen cargo handling operations at DUS by introducing newer technologies. “Swissport has invested heavily in the digitalization of its air cargo business to handle air cargo efficiently and intelligently,” Suknovic said. “As one of the first steps in the operational transition, we will introduce Cargospot from CHAMP , which is used globally by Swissport Cargo. “Cargospot is a comprehensive operations and terminal management system, used to manage inbound and outbound handling, reporting, or custom and security compliance,” she said. Cargospot facilitates paper-free warehouse operation and is available on mobile devices, according to CHAMP’s website. “We will gradually introduce more digitalized tools used in other Swissport warehouses into Dusseldorf’s warehouse operation,” Suknovic said. Some of those tools include “state-of-the-art weighing and dimming technology” and mobile computer devices, she said. DUS is Germany’s fourth-largest airport, and Swissport DUS Cargo Services expects to handle about 70,000 tonnes of cargo in 2024, Suknovic said. Swissport also plans to add truck dock capacity to its DUS operations and to install castor decks, which support manual movement of pallets and unit load devices. Merging operations Just as digitalization will be gradual, the fusion of the companies’ operations will take time. While joint operations have begun, Suknovic said the current Swissport Cargo operation will move into the airport warehouse Sept. 4. “That includes all staff and cargo of our customers at the current facility,” she said. “Certain operational equipment, like a castor deck or forklifts, will be moved into the facilities as well. Effective that date, all deliveries and pickups will take place at the airport facilities. Further processes between both partners will be aligned and streamlined within a transition phase of three months until the end of the year.” Swissport will move about 30 employees to the airport, bringing the total number of employees onsite to about 130, DUS spokesperson Tankred Stachelhaus told Air Cargo Next . This merger comes at a time of expansion for DUS, airport Chief Executive Lars Redeligx told Air Cargo Next . He pointed to recent “new connections” with Qatar Airways , Etihad Airways and Delta Air Lines . “The merger is a win-win for the Dusseldorf location and the airport,” Redeligx said.
