Cargo operations limited in Israel

As the Israel-Hamas war continues for a third week, flight operations into the country remain spotty, leaving forwarders concerned over delayed and limited shipping options. Following attacks on Israel on Oct. 7 by Hamas that ignited a declaration of war by Israel, several major carriers halted flights operations into Tel Aviv due to security concerns . After temporarily limiting operations in Israel, UPS and FedEx have resumed flights where it is safe to do so, according to recent service updates. DHL also continues flights into the country. U.K. forwarder Kintetsu World Express (KWE) said there may be delays to cargo shipments in and out of the country. “ The Israel Airports Authority has announced Tel Aviv and Ramon airports are to remain open,” the forwarder said in a statement on its website. “However, due to the uncertain developments, KWE may not be able to accept cargo to and from Israel. The situation is being closely monitored by KWE to mitigate the impact on scheduling.” Tel Aviv is served by Ben Gurion International Airport (TLV), and Ramon International Airport (ETM) serves southern Israel. ”KWE said in an Oct. 11 service update that shipments from Israel may be affected due to global carriers in Europe, the United States and Asia suspending operations in Israel. K+N cargo operations mostly recovered German forwarder Kuehne+Nagel (K+N) said that, after some delays, its cargo operations have recovered. “As of now, Kuehne+Nagel Tel Aviv offices remain fully functional and operational. This is a testament to our commitment to maintaining essential services even in challenging times,” a K+N spokesperson told Air Cargo Next . “Customs and regulation authorities in Israel are functioning without disruption. All customs-related offices and regulatory bodies continue to operate on their regular schedules, ensuring the smooth flow of cargo and goods within the necessary legal frameworks. “Furthermore, while international airlines have temporarily suspended flights to and from Tel Aviv, it is worth noting that TLV airport remains open,” the spokesperson said. “We would like to highlight that El Al and Cal Airlines are still providing services, thus offering alternative transportation options for your cargo needs.” The U.S. Postal Service also warned of shipping delays, announcing in a public statement Oct. 10 that there would be “limited transportation capacity to Israel.” The service alert was still in effect as of Oct. 20. Additionally, eBay suspended shipments from the United States to Israel due to limited carrier flights. “Due to the current conflict in Israel, most major U.S. shipping carriers are experiencing disruptions in service into the country,” according to an Oct. 13 service alert on its website. “EBay is temporarily pausing sales from the United States to buyers with shipping addresses in Israel as we cannot ensure that these packages will reach their final destination.”
