TIACA’s climate action platform aims to unite industry players

In a bid to unite the air cargo industry and give visibility to sustainability targets, TIACA recently launched its Investing in Climate Action platform, allowing users to track and invest in carbon avoidance projects around the globe. [caption id="attachment_57137058" align="alignright" width="270"] (Courtesy/Can Stock)[/caption] An annual TIACA sustainability survey indicates that many organizations want to do more yet need guidance and support,” Glyn Hughes , director general at TIACA, told Air Cargo Next . “The Investing in Climate Action platform isn’t a reporting tool — it’s an action tool, Hughes said. “It allows organizations to directly invest in a number of different projects which benefit the environment and the global community. The investment, in turn, generates a carbon credit, which is then certified. So, an organization invests in worthwhile projects, which are then recognized as helping improve the environment.” Taking a ction Unlike other platforms that track emissions and decarbonization efforts, this platform allows users to act, Brandon Fried , executive director of the Airforwarders Association , told Air Cargo Next . “While other reporting tools simply track emissions, this platform empowers companies to directly invest in pre-vetted projects that demonstrably reduce carbon footprints around the world,” he said “This translates into tangible benefits for various stakeholders. Carriers and freight forwarders can use the platform to offset their emissions and showcase their commitment to sustainability , attracting environmentally conscious customers,” Fried added. TIACA’s climate platform covers investment projects across three main areas, according to the release, including: Nature-based solutions; Renewable energy; and Improved community and living conditions. “While there’s no information available on precisely which technologies are tracked, the platform focuses on projects that promote renewable energy sources like solar and wind power to decrease dependence on fossil fuels,” Fried said. “It might also support initiatives focused on improved efficiency in aircraft performance and the development of nature-based solutions like reforestation projects that absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.” Ambitious goal The hope is that more air cargo leaders will use the data provided through the Investing in Climate Action platform to reach net zero, an ambitious goal with today’s resources, Hughes said. “In order to achieve the aviation industry’s net-zero objective by 2050 many things have to change,” Hughes said. “Firstly, the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) will have to increase significantly from the 1% to 2%, where it is today, up to approximately 65%, where it is expected to be by 2050.” While many customers want to offset transportation costs through SAF or approved offset programs, SAF is not widely available and the carbon offset industry is complex and challenging to navigate, Hughes said. To achieve net zero by 2050, the aviation industry, which accounts for 2% to 3% of global carbon emissions, would need to produce 450 billion liters of SAF, he said. In 2023, 600 million liters of SAF was produced globally, double the amount produced in 2022 , but only 1% of the 2050 goal. In time, TIACA’s platform could evolve to bring greater visibility to the air cargo community’s environmental efforts, Fried said. “We might see an expansion of project options to encompass a wider range of sustainability initiatives within air cargo,” Fried said. “Data and tracking improvements could provide more detailed information on the impact of each project, while integration with existing industry data platforms could streamline the process for users.” Register here for Air Cargo Next ’s free webinar, “The Role of Drones in the Future of Air Cargo,” on Tuesday, March 26, at 11 a.m. ET.
