DP World integrates AI for health care logistics

Freight forwarder DP World is integrating AI technologies into its 250 warehouses to drive more efficient health care logistics operations. [caption id="attachment_57143715" align="alignright" width="353"] (Courtesy/DP World)[/caption] “By integrating AI into our inventory management, we can accurately predict demand and optimize supply chain efficiency,” the company stated in a recent LinkedIn post. The technology can detect and anticipate temperature fluctuations in refrigerated containers, aka reefers, helping preserve volatile medical goods throughout the supply chain, according to the social post. DP World has been working to simplify its end-to-end logistics operations as well as to remedy challenges across the supply chain by increasing automation , Morten Johansen , executive vice president for the Americas at DP World, told Air Cargo Next . “ DP World is at the forefront of integrating automation technologies into our warehouses to enhance efficiency, safety and scalability,” he said. “We are currently working on the deployment of various automated solutions, each designed to optimize different aspects of our operations.” The pandemic showed that DP World ’s health care infrastructure was not resilient enough — particularly for developing markets, according to the forwarder. Improved technologies allow for more flexibility, whether that’s in planning, forecasting or mitigating risk, Johansen said. These technologies include: AI warehouse planning tools to optimize warehouse layout, inventory placement and workflow; Robots and autonomous mobile robots to streamline the picking process; Narrow belt sorters to divert parcels accurately and rapidly; and Automatic baggers and machines that package on demand to enhance efficiency. Variety of tech These technologies were integrated into DP World’s $200 million air cargo hub at Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) in the Dominican Republic in 2023, Johansen said. “We are also looking at automated storage and retrieval systems to increase storage density and retrieval speeds for pallets and cases, vertical lift modules to optimize vertical space, reducing the warehouse footprint and automated guided vehicles to autonomously transport goods around the warehouse,” he said. Technological advancements and shifting demand in e-commerce have created significant enhancements in logistics capability, “meaning supply chains are better suited to deliver personalized goods,” according to the forwarder. In a recent report, market analysis company Gartner highlighted this change, stating that “tailoring products to individual customers’ needs is nothing new for supply chains [and] taking that to higher levels is a key differentiator for more advanced companies.” The medical economy has benefited from broader supply chain shifts but must now become a driver, DP World stated in a company blog. “To keep up with digital trends ... consumer-oriented retailers have started using larger cargo ships to move vast quantities of stock and ensure demand can be met at distribution,” the blog post stated. “For personalized medicine, however, the need is increasingly oriented around smaller quantities of high-value goods delivered to meet timelines and conditions that are significantly more demanding.”
