FedEx opens logistics hub at Tallinn Airport

FedEx has opened a new air and ground logistics facility at Tallinn Airport, expanding Estonia’s access to global markets and strengthening the country’s growing e-commerce sector. The facility is located in the Tallinn Airport’s (TLL) southern business complex, according to a Sept. 26 release from FedEx. Outfitted with automated sorting systems, it can handle up to 3,000 parcels per hour and directly links Estonia to FedEx’s air hub in Paris and its largest road hub in Warsaw. (Courtesy/FedEx)[/caption] The facility features multi-sided scanning, which captures package dimensions and barcode data from all angles. It has direct access to the airport, where a FedEx aircraft operates every business day, the release said. FedEx said the investment is designed to help local businesses, particularly e-commerce companies, expand internationally. Estonia’s online trade has been growing about 20% annually, reaching 5.2 billion euros ($6.1 billion) in turnover, according to the Estonian E-Commerce Association. Logistics costs have been a key obstacle for exporters, and the new hub is expected to improve competitiveness, according to FedEx. European expansion The warehouse, three times larger than the company’s previous facility, has direct access to a FedEx aircraft operating daily from TLL. Deliveries can reach the U.S. East Coast in one business day and Asia in two to five days, according to the release. The center also includes 1,200 square meters of office space and incorporates sustainability features such as rooftop solar panels, geothermal heating and electric vehicle charging stations. FedEx has operated in Estonia since 1994. The TLL facility is part of a broader regional expansion that has seen the company add or expand seventeen facilities in Central and Eastern Europe in recent years. FedEx also began operating a 25,300-square-meter global air transit facility at iGA Istanbul Airport (IST) in August. The site can handle 1.3 million shipments weekly .
