Sun Country to operate 2 more freighters for Amazon

Sun Country Airlines will operate an additional two freighters for Amazon Air, bringing the total to twenty-two, this year ahead of the carrier being acquired by Allegiant. (Courtesy/Xtreme Aviation)[/caption] Las Vegas-based Allegiant Travel, owner of passenger airline Allegiant Air, announced Jan. 11 that it would acquire Sun Country Airlines for about $1.5 billion. The acquisition, expected to close in the second half of 2026, will not affect Minneapolis-based Sun Country’s long-term contract with Amazon Air. Amazon and Sun Country have expanded that contract to include two more aircraft, Allegiant Chief Executive Gregory Anderson said during a call with investors today. Allegiant has been communicating with Amazon since it began the acquisition process, Sun Country President and CEO Jude Bricker said on today’s call. Sun Country began flying Amazon’s 737-800BCFs in 2020 and had twelve at the end of 2024. The carrier agreed with Amazon in 2024 to take on eight more units by the third quarter of 2025 as part of a contract that runs through 2030. Sun Country became the sole CMI operator of Amazon’s narrowbodies in the United States after Atlas ceased all CMI service for Amazon in 2025 . Cargo Facts believes the two additional aircraft joining Sun Country could be units 29938 and 33544, both 737-800BCFs. The units were operated by ASL Airlines Ireland for Amazon Air but have been in maintenance since the end of 2025. Amazon did not respond to requests for comment by the time of publication. Allegiant to acquire Sun Country When the acquisition is completed, Allegiant and Sun Country shareholders will own approximately 67% and 33%, respectively, of the combined company on a fully diluted basis, according to the Jan. 11 release from Allegiant. The combined company will continue under the Allegiant name. However, each airline will operate separately until Allegiant obtains a single operating certificate from the FAA that consolidates operations, the release said. Upon closing, Anderson will continue as CEO and Robert Neal, president and chief financial officer at Allegiant, will remain in that role. Bricker and two other Sun Country board members will join Allegiant’s board of directors, expanding the size of the Allegiant board to eleven from eight. Bricker will also serve as an adviser to Anderson to facilitate integration. The combined company will be headquartered in Las Vegas but will maintain a large presence in Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minn., area. The transaction has been unanimously approved by both companies’ boards of directors and is expected to close later this year, subject to receipt of U.S. federal antitrust clearance and other required regulatory approvals, the approval of both companies’ shareholders and other customary closing conditions, the release said. Shares of Allegiant Travel Co. ( NASDAQ: ALGT ) were down 6.28% from market open to $89.1 as of market close today. Allegiant has a market capitalization of $1.6 billion. Shares of Sun Country Airlines ( NASDAQ: SNCY ) were up 10.59% from market open to $17.44 as of market close today. The carrier has a market capitalization of $922 million.
