Liege expansion to support doubled throughput goal

The $575 million Cargoland project under development at Liege Airport aims to double its yearly cargo throughput to around 2.5 million tonnes by 2040. The project, which is seeking customers to occupy its first set of warehouses, would place Liege (LGG) within the ten busiest airports worldwide by cargo throughput, alongside hubs including Hong Kong (HKG) which ranked as the busiest globally in 2025, Louisville (SDF), which was fourth-busiest, and Guangzhou (CAN), which was tenth-busiest, according to the most recent data from Airports Council International. (Courtesy/Liege Airport)[/caption] Cargoland, located on the north side of the Belgian airport, will comprise about 900,000 square meters of logistics development, such as new warehouses, plus 240,000 square meters of office development, Frederic Brun, vice president of sales and marketing at LGG, told Cargo Facts . “Our vision is to transition from a transit cargo airport model to a provider of multimodal logistics solutions,” Laurent Jossart, chief executive of LGG, said in a release last month. First steps The first of three first-line warehouses with direct access to the aircraft apron is expected to be completed by the end of 2028. It will be followed by two additional warehouses “with the next phases to follow progressively, depending on market demand, commercial commitments and the outcome of the call-for-interest process,” Brun said. The warehouses will account for a combined 38,000 square meters of space. (Courtesy/Liege Airport)[/caption] The three warehouses will flank an MRO facility alongside the apron, according to the Cargoland master plan. An additional row of second-line warehouses will be located behind the first, next to a complex of operational and support buildings. Though ground has not yet broken on the first warehouse, LGG is preparing to begin construction on a second-line logistics development including warehouses and truck-charging stations on the southwestern side of the airport, to be built in tandem with the first first-line warehouse. “Cargoland is designed to accommodate growing cargo demand with dedicated infrastructure, advanced digital solutions and better integration between air, road and rail,” Brun said. “The first-line warehouses will be complemented by second-line logistics zones and dedicated areas for cargo verticals such as e-commerce, pharma, perishables and express cargo.” Further developments LGG’s plan for Cargoland also includes adding as many as fifteen widebody freighter parking stands, bringing the airport’s total to as many as ninety-two. “The new Cargoland setup — including first-line warehouses, second-line logistics zones, dedicated cargo areas, additional stands and support infrastructure — will allow LGG to preserve its current fast cargo flows and turnaround performance while handling more volume,” Brun said. LGG in November 2025 saw the construction of a new 5,500-square-meter Swissport e-commerce hub capable of handling 300 tonnes per day. It followed the September 2025 launch of LGG Tracking, a centralized cargo tracking and management platform developed for Cargoland.
