Teleport chooses AVV as Australian hub to support Asia-Pacific network

Teleport, the logistics subsidiary of AirAsia parent Capital A, has chosen Avalon Airport near Melbourne as its Australian hub to support e-commerce shipments along Asian trade lanes. Trial shipments have begun using existing capacity on routes connecting Hong Kong (HKG) to Avalon (AVV) via Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS), David Reilly, commercial aviation manager at AVV, told Cargo Facts . (Courtesy/Teleport)[/caption] Qantas subsidiary Jetstar Airways operates the only scheduled passenger route between AVV and DPS using an A321neo. Additional routes connecting AVV with Shanghai (PVG) and Hangzhou (HGH) are expected to launch soon, followed by broader expansion to other Southeast Asian hubs, Reilly said. “The partnership leverages [AVV] as an alternative international freight gateway capable of supporting high-growth e-commerce logistics as international freight volumes from China and Southeast Asia continue to expand,” Teleport said in an Aug. 12 release. Malaysia-based Teleport will operate from AVV’s 8,500-square-meter cargo facility, Reilly said. Teleport already moves cargo to primary Australian airports including Sydney (SYD), Melbourne (MEL) and Brisbane (BNE) from hubs across China, India, Vietnam and its base in Malaysia, according to the release. Teleport’s freighter fleet includes three A321-200P2Fs (926, 1023 and 1607) operated by AirAsia. In addition to bellyhold capacity on all AirAsia passenger aircraft, Teleport has access to freighter and belly capacity on a host of partner carriers, including Emirates , MJets Air, Etihad, Astral Aviation and others. Australia-Malaysia capacity Freighter capacity from Malaysia to Australia is down roughly 39% year to date over the corresponding period last year, and Australia to Malaysia has contracted 47% in that period, Gagan Deep, management consultant at Accenture Strategy and Consulting, told Cargo Facts . However, both route directions have seen growth in some cargo types. Dairy product shipments out of Australia grew 36% and avocados grew 14% YTD over 2025. Meanwhile, electrical components out of Malaysia grew 114% YTD YoY, Deep added. In January, Teleport raised $50 million in pre-IPO capital to support freighter capacity growth . “A large portion will focus on securing more capacity from the right partner airlines to approximately double our current available volume,” a Teleport spokesperson told Cargo Facts at the time. The forwarder has said it was considering placing dedicated freighters in Bahrain, which would serve as its Middle Eastern hub . “The Middle East is an emerging e-commerce market,” Jan Philipp Poter, chief business officer for Teleport, said at Cargo Facts EMEA in April. “For us, it’s important to build a hub [into] Bahrain, [which] has emerged as a very valuable partner.” Cargo Facts Symposium 2026, the premier event for the freighter aircraft and air cargo industries, will take place in Nashville, Tenn., on Oct. 21-23.
