Western Global pilots join ALPA

Pilots who fly for Florida-based Western Global Airlines officially joined the Air Line Pilots Association, International (ALPA) today. This certification by the National Mediation Board took place after 69% of voting-eligible pilots voted in favor of joining a pilot union. Presently, Western Global employs 180 pilots, according to a press release from ALPA. Western Global pilots were previously unrepresented by any union. Western Global Airlines is the latest carrier to join ALPA’s growing number of cargo airlines, including Amerijet whose pilots recently voted out the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT) in favor of the ALPA pilot group last October. ALPA says that, including Western Global, it now represents 36 airlines. At least 11 other airlines operate freighters on their air operator’s certificates, including: Air Transport International, Kalitta Air, Mesa Air Group, Alaska Air, Amerijet International, Morningstar Air Express, Calm Air, Sun Country Air, FedEx, First Air and Wasaya Airways. Management for the company says it is ready to work with ALPA. “We’re a growing company, and as companies grow, they change and they mature,” said Ted Lytle, president of Western Global Airlines. “We’re looking forward to working with [ALPA] and I think we’re in a good position for growth,” he told Air Cargo World. Recently, ALPA has been a vocal advocate of health and safety issues for flight crews operating during the pandemic. As a representative for FedEx pilots, ALPA called for an “immediate suspension of operations in Hong Kong” over perceived sub-standard government quarantine facilities in early January. “The addition of Western Global pilots’ voices will strengthen ALPA and allow us all to be more effective in advancing aviation and promoting the airline pilot profession,” said Joe DePete, ALPA president, in the April 6 press release. “I am extremely pleased to welcome yet another all-cargo airline to our ranks.”
