Delta Cargo to expand DASH network to accommodate e-commerce demand

Delta Cargo plans to scale out its additional first- and last-mile capabilities for original equipment manufacturers (OEM) and customer markets through its DASH Door-To-Door network in an effort to accommodate growing domestic e-commerce demand. [caption id="attachment_70653" align="alignright" width="335"] Photo: Delta Air Lines[/caption] Delta Cargo’s door-to-door service for OEM markets currently works in cooperation with Atlanta-based same-day delivery service Roadie. However, the combination carrier is looking to build out its network connectivity with additional delivery service providers that can implement DASH’s express services, Rob Walpole, vice president of Delta Cargo, told Air Cargo World. The DASH product provides “time-definite door-to-door, or point-to-point, services for different industry sectors where we can provide a shorter timeline than the express carriers," said Walpole. He added that Delta is focused on identifying potential partners and capabilities to provide the service. While Delta Cargo would consider an acquisition in the space, Walpole said, he noted that there are currently no specific acquisitional plans in place and the carrier is instead continuing to focus on partnerships. Aside from its industry-based markets, DASH services are also consumer-focused, said Walpole. While the current DASH consumer service is restricted to only shippers in the TSA Known Shipper program, such as FedEx, Delta Cargo is seeking to identify the changes required in the network and product offerings to enable DASH express services to general customers and consumers. Delta’s DASH Critical product launched in 2017 , and was the first GPS-enabled, same-day product offered by a U.S.-based freight carrier. The carrier then launched an expansion of this service to include international destinations in 2018. After launching DASH Door-To-Door in October 2019, service partnership with Roadie has grown to include 34 pick-up and 59 delivery destinations .
