Silk Way West expands India connectivity with weekly Baku-Mumbai route

Azerbaijan-based Silk Way West Airlines launched a 747F-operated weekly cargo service between its hub at Baku (GYD) and Mumbai (BOM), India, yesterday. [caption id="attachment_96311" align="alignright" width="395"] Photo: Silk Way West[/caption] The GYD-BOM route operates every Thursday and aims to widen Silk Way West’s network in the region to better serve India’s cargo market, according to a carrier statement released yesterday. While the route has a special focus on transporting automotive related commodities and pharmaceuticals, the aircraft is well-positioned to carry other industrial, aviation, engineering and machinery-related commodities, as well as odd dimensional cargo, a Silk Way West spokesperson told Air Cargo World. This is the carrier’s second Indian destination. In June, Silk Way West upgraded its weekly service connecting GYD to Delhi (DEL) to a 747F with an available capacity of 100 tonnes, according to the release. “Our first goal was to expand on the success out of Delhi, but it became clear that India’s largest air cargo market out of Mumbai was currently being underserved by large, all-freighter capacity,” said the spokesperson. While Silk Way West plans to focus on its Mumbai service for now, the carrier is open to any ad-hoc or charter opportunities that may arise out of other Indian metros. Chennai-based cargo logistics company Taylor Logistics was appointed as Silk Way West’s second general sales agent (GSA) for India and will operate at BOM, according to the release. Meanwhile, Delhi-headquartered Hercules Aviation is the carrier’s long-term GSA at DEL. Although this route will be primarily used to transport automotive-related shipments, the carrier recently ordered five 777Fs to provide additional capacity for growing general cargo and e-commerce demand in various regions, including Asia. The carrier’s existing fleet consists of five 747-8F and five 747-400F aircraft, according to the company website. Silk Way Group, Silk Way West Airlines’ parent company, ranked at No. 33 in Air Cargo World ’s most recent Freight 50, in terms of total freight tonne kilometers. The carrier reported 2019 cargo traffic of about 2 billion FTKs.
