Shanghai airfreight ops face cancellations ahead of Typhoon Chanthu

Cargo operations at Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG), Shanghai Hongqiao Airport (SHA) and Ningbo Lishe International Airport (NGB) are currently suspended due to Typhoon Chanthu heading toward China’s east coast. The typhoon is forecasted to bring torrential rains, floods and strong winds to the region. [caption id="attachment_67337" align="alignright" width="344"] Photo: China Southern Airlines[/caption] Combination carriers, including China Eastern Airlines, United Airlines, Air China, Cathay Pacific, China Southern Airlines, and Hainan Airlines have canceled flights to and from PVG, SHA and NGB, according to flight tracking software. All flights in and out of PVG after 11 a.m. China Standard Time on Sept. 13 were canceled while flights in and out of SHA were canceled after 3 p.m., according to China-based forwarder Proair Logistics’ recent LinkedIn update . It is unclear how long the suspensions will remain in place at PVG, SHA and NGB. Flight cancellations have been posted through the morning of Sept. 14, although afternoon flights are still scheduled, according to flight tracking software. However, Proair Logistics noted that cargo delays are expected to continue during the next 48 hours, at least, while a recent market advisory from forwarder Kintetsu World Express Canada stated that all flights will be canceled through Sept. 14. Since the typhoon is moving slowly, it is anticipated that disruptions could persist through Sept. 15, according to KWE Canada’s advisory . Container import and export services at Ningbo and Shanghai port terminals have also been canceled until further notice, according to forwarder JAS Worldwide’s latest LinkedIn post . The category 1 typhoon, which has already hit the Philippines and Taiwan, will bring maximum wind gusts of up to 138 kph, or 86 mph, according to Everstream Analytics’ latest weekly weather forecast update. Flooding in and around Shanghai is also expected, with up to 38 cm, or about 15 inches, of rain. The additional disruptions will further exacerbate China’s cargo congestion issues as PVG is still recovering from a terminal closure in late August following a COVID-19 outbreak that caused further capacity strains and airfreight rates to soar. Cargo operations were also briefly disrupted at Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport (CGO) , one of mainland China’s busiest cargo airports, in late July following record-breaking floods in the Henan Province. PVG and CGO ranked No. 3 and No. 38, respectively, in Air Cargo World ’s Top 50 Cargo Airports , based on 2020 throughput.
