Lufthansa Cargo joins German digitalization project

Lufthansa Cargo joined the German Federal Ministry of Transport’s (BMVI) “Digital Test Field Air Cargo,” a new air cargo digitalization project that aims to create air cargo-specific research to improve networking within Germany’s airfreight industry through digitalized interfaces and automation. Lufthansa Cargo will contribute its experience in digitalization to the project, focusing on the exchange of data between all partners in the transport chain to increase efficiency and performance of airfreight in Germany, according to today’s release from the company. The data exchange will be the foundation for data-driven optimizations and artificial intelligence (AI)-based applications. [caption id="attachment_97019" align="alignright" width="501"] (Photo: Lufthansa Cargo)[/caption] All digital accompanying documents from manufacturers to consignees will be made available through the International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) ONE Record, an e-freight, data-sharing standard co-designed by Lufthansa Cargo that creates a single-record view of the shipment, according to the release. Digitalized temperature data, position data and images will also be readily available. In turn, the digitalized processes will create a more transparent supply chain, allowing industry stakeholders to make more efficient forecasts and identify problems earlier. Digitalizing supply chain processes also has an environmental benefit as it reduces carbon emissions. “Digitalizing airfreight further also means making it more sustainable,” Harald Gloy, Lufthansa Cargo's executive board member for operations and human resources and a member of the BMVI's innovation commission, said in the release. “To this end, we see great potential in optimized data exchange between all partners in the airfreight transport chain, for example, which we want to leverage.” The project, coordinated by the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics (IML), was launched Sept. 19, according to a recent release. Under the leadership of IML and Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences, various solutions are to be developed and demonstrated in six subprojects over the next three years. The BMVI is supporting the project with roughly $8.2 million and will cover three topics: standardized data exchange between air cargo stakeholders with reference to national and international initiatives; automated planning, handling and transport; and added value through AI-supported optimization and forecasting, according to IML’s release. Other project partners include logistics providers DB Schenker and Sovereign Speed GmbH, and cargo handlers CHI Deutschland Cargo Handling and LUG aircargo handling GmbH.
