TIACA establishes common vision for industry with sustainability roadmap

An air cargo sustainability roadmap from the International Air Cargo Association (TIACA) released today establishes an industry framework to bolster sustainable transformation within the industry to shape industry commitments and accomplish its goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. The roadmap, which was released to coincide with the United Nations Climate Change Conference, not only illustrates the role of air cargo stakeholders in carbon emissions but also identifies 30 actionable priorities for industry stakeholders to focus efforts and resources on, in order to meet or construct sustainability goals. Priorities include eliminating waste, protecting biodiversity, decarbonization and more. TIACA's report was constructed in partnership with Switzerland-based consultancy Change Horizon . Photo/Air France[/caption] The 30 priorities are broken down into eight key objectives, including investing in and deploying sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) or other fossil-free energy; upgrading fleets to cleaner aerial and ground vehicles; transitioning to green buildings; using effective offsetting mechanisms; investigating and adopting carbon capture technologies; reducing energy consumption in own operations; optimizing vehicle utilization; and reducing the weight of vehicles and ancillary equipment. TIACA published the industry’s first sustainability report in April, which showcased that 90% of air cargo stakeholders view sustainability as a priority. The survey, which was also constructed in partnership with Change Horizon, was meant to serve as a “ground zero” assessment against future progress in sustainability can be measured against, according to the report . Achieving a sustainable industry transformation takes collaboration , and a growing number of carriers and freight forwarders have been implementing initiatives in the past year to reduce its industry carbon footprint. Earlier this month, Perishable logistics companies Airflo and Tiger Freight joined Air France-KLM Cargo’s SAF program , reducing the amount of carbon emissions produced from exporting perishables from Kenya and Zimbabwe. In October, Japan-based carrier ANA Cargo operated its first SAF-fueled flight between Japan and Germany in partnership with forwarder trio Kintetsu World Express, Yusen Logistics and Nippon Express, while Lufthansa Cargo and DB Schenker extended their weekly SAF-powered flight between Frankfurt (FRA) and Shanghai (PVG) to March 2022.
