Zero Petroleum offers carbon-neutral alternative to SAF, hydrogen

DUBAI — Leaders of the air cargo industry were introduced to a synthetic aviation fuel that eliminates the carbon footprint released into the atmosphere and only needs the air we breathe to supply distribution of jet fuel. Synthetic aviation fuel is made from carbon dioxide captured from the air and hydrogen extracted from water and can be used in any conventional engine powered by fossil fuels, Zero Petroleum co-founder and Chief Executive Paddy Lowe said during a presentation on his company’s product at Cargo Facts EMEA 2023 this week. (Photo/Cargo Facts)[/caption] The Royal Air Force (RAF) awarded Zero Petroleum a contract in 2022 to develop the technology and prepare it to power all RAF fleet aircraft, Lowe said. Drone manufacturer and operator Dronamics also intends to adopt synthetic aviation fuel in its aircraft . Zero’s first plant will be based in Oxfordshire, England, and be capable of producing up to 30 liters of synthetic aviation fuel per day, he added. Zero Petroleum’s synthetic fuel is more energy-dense than regular jet fuel, Lowe noted, adding that Zero has had discussions with major airlines like Lufthansa. There are not currently enough resources for sustainable aviation fuel, which reduces the fuel carbon footprint by 50%, he said, adding that he is a proponent of making the right liquid fuel solutions. “If you want to make profits, do the work and make the right fuel on the ground, and then take it into the air and carry the most payload as you can,” Lowe said. “Taking a hydrogen aircraft, for me it’s very simple: If I put hydrogen in a heavy tank on the plane, I’m leaving a lot of the cargo on the apron, and that’s not going to be earning any money.” Stay up to date on all the news coming out of Cargo Facts EMEA 2023 this week here.
