CanaryFly ends short stint in freighter ops

CanaryFly has exited freighter operations less than a year after flying its first ATR 72-500F. The Spanish carrier, which added the 2006-vintage unit 726 (ex-Binter Canarias) around a year ago after conversion according to the Aeroconseil STC at Toulouse Francazal airport, confirmed to Cargo Facts that it will no longer operate cargo flights, at least for now. (Photo/Aeroconseil)[/caption] CanaryFly said that unit 726, along with another ATR 72-500F (752) from its own passenger fleet that it sent for conversion in early 2021, will be sold by the end of the year to another operator as the airline focuses on recovering its commercial passenger operations. Unit 726 began flying in March between the Canary Islands and Madrid (MAD) but has been parked in Gran Canaria (LPA) since late April, while the 2007-vintage unit 752 completed conversion at LPA in April but has not flown in its new configuration. CanaryFly previously told Cargo Facts that the pandemic had prompted it to pivot and adapt quickly as passenger travel took a nosedive around May 2020. The airline has four other passenger ATR 72-500s. CanaryFly’s departure leaves Swiftair and affiliate Cygnus Air as the only freighter operators based in Spain, with a fleet that includes ATR 42Fs, ATR 72Fs, 737Fs and 757Fs.
