New Aeroterm cargo facility opens at CVG

A new multitenant 50,400 square-foot airside cargo facility recently completed at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) by developer Aeroterm has already 88% of it leased for integrators and ground service equipment maintenance, with FedEx as the primary lessee. Aeroterm is the airport development subsidiary of Realterm, a supply chain real estate developer and operator. Alexi Lachambre, Aeroterm’s vice president of investments, told Air Cargo World the company is “in discussions with several cargo carriers and other terminal support providers for the remaining vacancy.” [caption id="attachment_95105" align="alignright" width="390"] The location of the Aeroterm facility is indicated by the star. Image courtesy of Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport.[/caption] Future phases of the project could lead to the company more than doubling its facility space, Aeroterm said. “We can build a freestanding building of up to 120,000 square feet adjacent to this new facility,” Lachambre said. “We are currently in discussions with several prospective tenants and have incorporated certain design elements in our current facility that will allow a rapid delivery of the next phase,” which Aeroterm expects to pursue “in the near future,” due to rapid growth of cargo volumes at CVG. CVG reported 14.8% year-over-year growth in cargo tonnage at the airport for 2020, to 1.3 million tonnes. Aeroterm’s facility at CVG incorporates several design trends Lachambre said are increasingly in demand for its airport facilities. These include more vehicle parking to support larger numbers of employees needed for pick-and-pack operations, column-free building layouts for better operational efficiency, and a greater focus on sustainability and efficiency to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards. The CVG Phase II site design will feature another in-demand element: ramps that can accommodate larger aircraft. It will also be able to accommodate six Group V aircraft, which include large widebody aircraft such as 747s, 777s and MD-11s, Lachambre said. Airport management counts Aeroterm as a tenant but said CVG has been involved in overseeing construction and inspections of the project. The new facility is located at the north end of CVG’s campus, as indicated by the star on the included map, Senior Manager of Communications and Community Affairs Mindy Kershner told Air Cargo World . Cargo facilities for DHL and Amazon Air are located at the airport’s south end. The Amazon hub is currently under construction and expected to open later this year, according to the airport. In the meantime, Amazon has operated out of DHL’s facilities since May 2017. The full buildout for Amazon’s development at the south end of CVG’s campus is slated for 2026, according to CVG.
