Green Gains: American Airlines Cargo reduces plastic waste by 75 tonnes

American Airlines Cargo reduced its long-term plastic waste by more than 75 tonnes, the equivalent of 8.6 million plastic bottles, the company announced this week. American began using products from biodegradable plastic maker BioNatur Plastics in 2022 and has since been replacing the plastic traditionally used in cargo operations with BioNatur’s stretch wrap and pallet covers, according to a release by the airline. [caption id="attachment_97540" align="alignleft" width="300"] BioNatur biodegradable plastic wrap for cargo shipments.[/caption] American first began replacing traditional plastic at its major U.S. hubs and extended the program in 2023 to its regional hubs, according to the release. American will continue using the BioNatur line, which is “manufactured with a 1% load of an organic, food-safe proprietary additive that allows anaerobic bacteria to digest the plastic in a landfill,” the release stated. Outside of a landfill, the plastic has an indefinite shelf life and performs exactly like traditional plastic products, the release stated. “Our transition to BioNatur Plastics is one way we can implement real change in our cargo operations,” Greg Schwendinger , president of American Airlines Cargo, said in the release. Reducing plastics is a step toward IATA member airlines’ goal of reaching net zero by 2050, according to the release. DataLogic to use DHL green shipping solution Vietnam-based automatic data capture and factory automation market company Datalogic is the first customer in that country to implement the GoGreen Plus solution at D HL Global Forwarding to reduce carbon emissions through shipping. Customers can select the amount of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) they wish to use to offset carbon emissions produced during cargo transport, Air Cargo Next reported during the service’s launch in February 2023. “In the logistics industry, leadership extends beyond efficiency; it encompasses responsibility,” Laurence Cheung , managing director of DHL Global Forwarding Vietnam, said in a Jan. 8 release. “We are honored to support Datalogic in delivering a more sustainable logistics approach. Through this partnership, we are not merely moving goods but forging a path where environmental consciousness meets operational excellence. Together, we navigate a course where each shipment signifies a commitment to a greener, more responsible future for our industry and the planet we share.” The collaboration is expected to reduce carbon emissions by 40 tonnes, according to the release. Unique Logistics releases first ESG report Hong Kong-based global forwarder Unique Logistics International this week released its first environmental, social and governance (ESG) report as part of its 2024 sustainability targets. The forwarder’s mission is to steer the company toward more sustainable solutions, according to a Unique Logistics release. The report highlights targets for the year, including: Conducting operations responsibly and monitoring ecological impact; Collaboration with suppliers to enhance understanding of sustainability practices and ensure alignment with common objectives; Rigorous controls around sustainability data governance and alignment across the organization with a robust global ethics and compliance program; Direct collaboration on ESG initiatives to contribute to environmental well-being and strengthen customer relationships; Finding ways to reduce or offset its carbon footprint, including embracing a paperless approach, choosing energy-efficient facilities and offering an emissions calculator for sustainable freight routes; Targeting a 30% reduction in landside client emissions by 2025 compared to the 2022 baseline; and Creating a goal for a credit reduction in emissions in procurement practices and partnerships with carriers to promote SAF use.
