Airlink responds to COVID-19 with CARES Initiative

In anticipation of the COVID-19 pandemic spreading to developing countries and vulnerable regions of the world in the months ahead, Airlink unveiled its Coordinated Air Response for Emergency Supplies, or CARES, Initiative. The program aims to provide stimulus in the form of air cargo lift to nonprofit humanitarian and disaster-response organizations providing relief to areas affected by COVID-19.

The organization hopes to raise $10 million to launch an “air bridge” that will connect areas hit hard by the virus with vital medical supplies and resources provisioned by reputable nongovernmental organizations (NGOs).

Airlink seeks to mitigate the widely reported difficulties many lower-income countries face procuring personal protective equipment and other supplies, due to intense competition from wealthier nations.  As of April 1, Airlink’s network of more than 40 commercial and charter airlines had already moved 230,000 masks and 24,000 hospital gowns to support a number of NGOs working to aid areas struggling with the pandemic.

While COVID-19 response capabilities are currently Airlink’s priority, CARES also provisions support capacity for looming seasonal emergencies such as the Atlantic hurricane season, Southeast Asia’s monsoon season and floods.
