CFC: Amazon air network spend exceeds $1B per year as dedicated fleet grows

Shipping costs outpaced revenue growth by a factor of 1.6 in 2020

Amazon is now spending $1.1-$1.2 billion dollars per year on its own-controlled air operation in the United States and Europe, according to estimates from Cargo Facts Consulting that are inclusive of fuel, aircraft leases, and CMI and ACMI operating arrangements.

Despite the unit’s rapid growth to eighty-three freighters as of Dec. 3, 2020, Amazon’s air network spend represents a mere fraction of its rapidly growing shipping bill. In 2020, shipping costs increased 61% year on year. As the company has expanded its premium fulfillment offering, its shipping costs have outpaced revenue growth by a factor of 1.6, according to CFC.
