Asiana finds buyer for stored 747-400BDSF

Yet another stored freighter-converted 747-400 could take to the skies again, potentially with Western Global Airlines. South Korea-based Asiana Airlines has sold its single stored 747-400BDSF (25452), the carrier confirmed to Cargo Facts [FAT 00 6127 ] . (Photo/Asiana Airlines)[/caption] The 747 , equipped with General Electric CF6-80C2 engines, was recently photographed being prepared for reactivation in Victorville ( VCV ) , where the aircraft had been in storage since May 2017. The Federal Aviation Administration registr y reveal s that a registration has already been reserved and that Aerospace Asset Trading LLC facilitated the deal to transfer the freighter from its previous owner to JimSunn Air LLC , an affiliate of Western Global Airlines. The aircraft was delivered new to Asiana in Combi configuration in 1992, and was later converted to full-freighter configuration by Israel Aerospace Industries in 2007. Western Global’s plans for the 1992-vintage aircraft are unclear, and the carrier did not respond to a request for comment. Western Global currently operates two 747- 400 BC F s (26344 and 26356, both ex-Atlas Air) of a similar vintage and one production 747-400F (29258, ex-Atlas Air) which it acquired in 2020 . All three are also powered by GE CF6 engines. The carrier also maintains a sizable fleet of MD-11Fs — a mix of active and inactive units , and airframes used as stores of spare parts. Asiana told Cargo Facts it has no near-term plans to retire the other seven 747-400BDSFs in its fleet and will likely fly them all for at least two to three more years. Asiana’s cargo fleet also includes four factory-built 747-400Fs and a 767-300F. The carrier had previously told Cargo Facts it was considering modernizing its fleet with 777Fs “or other modern freighters” in 2022. However, given the ongoing merger of Asiana and Korean Air, and the pandemic, any decisions will likely follow the completion of the merger. The store d widebody freighter fleet , meanwhile, continues to decline. In March , two U.A.E.-based companies reactivated older-vintage 747 freighters, with Aquiline International acquiring a 1991-vintage 747- 400BCF ( 25152 , ex-Cathay Pacific) and leasing out a 1991 747-400BDSF (24311 , ex-Air Cargo Global) , and Global Service Solutions putting into service a 747-200F (22545, ex-Air Georgia).
