DHL takes sustainability one step further with Eviation order

DHL Express has become the launch customer for the cargo version of the Alice electric aircraft by Seattle-based Eviation, with an order for twelve units. DHL, which expects to take delivery of the aircraft in 2024, told Cargo Facts that it plans to build several Alice feeder networks, initially starting in the U.S., most likely in California. (Photo/DHL Express)[/caption] Eviation CEO Omer Bar-Yohay told Cargo Facts that the cargo derivative of the Alice is identical to the commuter version except for the interior, which features a continuous cargo bay with 450 cubic feet of capacity and hard points throughout for multiple cargo nets. The cargo compartment offers temperature-control capabilities. The single-pilot Eviation Alice will have two magni650 motors produced by magniX, and will be capable of carrying 1.2 tonnes over a maximum range of 815 kilometers. DHL told Cargo Facts that, since the Alice is similar in size to the Cessna 208B, the company will be able to serve existing routes and open up new markets. The initial deployment will take the form of a mini-hub network so DHL can familiarize itself with the new technology and maintenance support required, the express integrator said. Eviation intends to carry out the first flight later this year, but the company declined to disclose any production specifics at this stage. Bar-Yohay declined to say what proportion of demand for the Alice aircraft he projects to come from the cargo market, only saying that Eviation anticipates “tremendous growth” for the freighter version. Eviation recently began assembly the first Alice prototype after revising and finalizing its design earlier this year. As part of DHL’s latest sustainability roadmap, which sets a zero-emissions target of 2050, the company plans to invest 7 billion euros by 2030 in reducing its CO2 emissions. DHL said major areas of focus will include the electrification of last-mile deliveries and sustainable aviation fuels. Other cargo operators have recently also unveiled plans to introduce fully electric vehicles, although most involve vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) aircraft or drones that are smaller, with lower payloads and ranges. UPS announced earlier this year that it expects to receive ten Alia-250c aircraft from Beta Technologies in 2024 , with options for up to 150 more. The Alia-250c has a payload of approximately 0.6 tonnes and a 400-kilometer range.
