Capacity-constrained carriers report cargo growth in July 2021

Multiple Asia Pacific-based combination carriers reported their strongest cargo traffic performance in July — historically a slow month — despite the lower availability of bellyhold capacity. Cargo contributed 95% of Taiwan-based China Airlines’ operating revenue in July 2021. The carrier reported its busiest month of the year yet for cargo traffic in July 2021, at 659 million freight-tonne kilometers (FTKs), a 38% increase from the same month in 2019. Cargo yields (TWD/FTK) remained 44% higher compared to July 2019 and are consistent month to month at 14.27. (Photo/EVA Air)[/caption] Air cargo capacity along the trans-Pacific trade lane remained lower by one-third in July 2021 compared to the same period in 2019, according to data from Accenture, creating significant opportunities for combination carriers based in the Asia-Pacific region — at least those with capacity — to grow their cargo business. Across all trade lanes, air cargo capacity was down by 12% in mid-July. Performance was much the same at Taiwan’s other large combination carrier, EVA Air. Registering July cargo traffic of 427 million FTKs, the result reflected a 42% increase compared to July 2019. EVA expects to grow its five-unit 777F fleet later this year when it expects to take delivery of three 777Fs on order with Boeing . Hong Kong-based Cathay Pacific saw a month-to-month increase in cargo traffic in July 2021 after resuming freighter services that had been canceled in June due to COVID-19 disruptions. Despite the improvement, cargo traffic remained 20% lower compared to 2019, at 753 million FTKs. Guangzhou-headquartered China Southern Airlines reported July 2021 cargo traffic that was down 3% from July 2019, at 626 million FTKs on lower domestic traffic. Singapore Airlines reported cargo traffic of 492 million FTKs in July 2021, a 10% drop compared to 2019. While freighter schedules remained full, passenger capacity remained at 32% of pre-Covid-19 levels, according to a traffic report from Singapore Airlines. Beijing-based Air China Cargo reported monthly cargo traffic that was 17% compared to July 2019 at 347 million FTKs.
