IAI completes 777-300ERSF first flight

The world’s first 777 freighter conversion achieved its first flight today in Tel Aviv (TLV) after years of work, placing Israel Aerospace Industries one step closer to earning a supplemental type certificate. The prototype 777-300ERSF’s (32789) flight lasted just under two hours, climbing to an altitude of 20,000 feet over the Mediterranean before returning to TLV. (Photo/IAI)[/caption] IAI said that the test flight is part of the final certification process for its 777-300ERSF program, which it expects to complete later this year. The company had originally planned to achieve the first flight of the 777-300ERSF in December 2022, but was forced to delay its timeline citing supply chain issues. Unit 32789 was first taken off its jacks that had held it in place for the conversion work in September 2022. In addition to its own facility at TLV, IAI will begin using the Etihad Engineering facility in Abu Dhabi (AUH) in 2023 and the Sharp Technics K facility in Seoul (ICN) in 2024. Unit 32789 will enter service with Kalitta Air , which will lease the aircraft from AerCap. Emirates , EVA Air , Cargojet and Challenge Group have also placed orders for the 777-300ERSF. When complete, the 777-300ERSF will be capable of lifting about 100 tonnes of cargo, according to a statement from IAI. AerCap, then known as GECAS, first launched “The Big Twin” program with IAI in 2020. Along with the 2005-vintage unit 32789, the lessor also owns two other ex-Emirates aircraft (32788 and 32785) that are at IAI’s TLV facilities. Units 32789 and 32785 are already carrying Kalitta Air registrations. After the first flight, IAI remains on track to become the world’s first 777 conversion STC holder — with Kansas Modification Center (KMC) and Mammoth Freighters also in the race to develop large-widebody conversions.
