Kale boosts digitization at FRA

Frankfurt Airport (FRA)-based cargo handler CHI Aviation Handling has extended its contract with logistics software provider Kale Logistics Solutions to utilize Kale’s Galaxy cargo handling software at the airport for five years. The cloud-based Galaxy enables full automation of handling processes, visibility of operations and integration with the stakeholder network, according to a July 19 release. Currently, more than 85 airports utilize the Galaxy platform. The solution integrates with handheld terminal devices and payment gateways, and provides end-to-end functions for imports, exports, transhipments and domestic handling, Mukesh Mudholkar, senior consultant for airport IT strategy at Kale told Air Cargo World . The software also automates some operational processes for cargo tracking, he added. [caption id="attachment_97576" align="alignright" width="466"] (Photo/Frankfurt Hahn Airport)[/caption] Like other digitalization solutions and initiatives to take off in the air cargo industry recently , Galaxy also helps replace paper-based processes. “A paperless and touchless cargo environment leads to faster processing of cargo, an enhanced customer experience, and more operational transparency while driving significant cost savings and this is the game-changer for the air cargo industry,” Mudholkar said. Digital processes help ease congestion FRA and other European hubs have recently been challenged by significant cargo delays on the ground; in fact, Lufthansa had to reroute freighters away from FRA earlier this month. The backups are the result of multiple factors, including a recent strike by ground staff , staffing shortages faced by much of the rest of the industry and volumes of throughput not seen since 2019. CHI is one of the many handlers looking to automate procedures as airports face high traffic congestion from surging passenger travel, and as handlers face labor struggles . Earlier this month Swissport launched a pilot program for automated guided vehicles (AGV) at FRA in partnership with logistics service provider Lodige Industries. Automated tracking technologies were in high demand among the ground handlers present at Air Cargo Tech Summit 2022 , who clamored for upgraded unit load devices (ULDs). Be it Bluetooth, camera-based systems capable of reading the text on ULDs, or something entirely novel, handlers are hungry for standardized, automated systems. FRA isn’t the only airport to adopt Kale’s technology. Vancouver International Airport (YVR) earlier this month implemented Kale’s Cargo Community System (CCS) to improve efficiency and streamline cargo flow. Kale is also piloting a community system truck slot and dock management module at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), with plans to pilot a CCS in South America as well. “Entities are starting to see that being connected through the supply chain is an absolute must,” Donna Mullins, vice president at Kale said during a presentation during Air Cargo Tech Summit 2022 . “The information exchange being shared across the board helps each entity to be more proactive, as opposed to reactive.” FRA ranked No. 14 in Air Cargo World’ s Top 50 Cargo Airports ranking, based on 2020 throughput.
