Consultant Insight: FedEx expands in Ireland, Germany

Amid cost-cutting, FedEx Express is optimizing its global network with a focus on Europe after its recently completed TNT integration. [caption id="attachment_76185" align="alignright" width="298"] Cathy Roberson, Cargo Facts Consulting senior consultant and Air Cargo Next columnist[/caption] During the company’s second-quarter earnings call in December 2022, Chief Executive Raj Subramaniam said the company has “spent the last several years bringing the networks [TNT and FedEx] together. “With integration behind us, we have shifted to optimization,” he added. “We are adjusting our network, deploying route productivity tools and investing in digital capabilities for planning and automation. Additionally, we are rightsizing our intra-Europe air network and improving processes to enhance the end-to-end customer journey.” Optimizing collection, delivery In February, FedEx opened a new facility in Cork, Ireland, expanded its Stuttgart Air Gateway and commissioned a new sorter at the gateway. The new 50,000-square-foot facility in Cork consolidates area FedEx operations. The new location connects two previously separate teams at Cork Airport and Little Island. It will benefit from easy access to Cork’s road network and its proximity to Shannon Airport, according to a recent press release from the company. The facility also has on-site dock levelers for the rapid loading of goods. The Cork facility’s proximity to major road and air networks and on-site dock levelers will speed up collection and delivery times for businesses and consumers, a goal FedEx hopes to accomplish through its optimization plans. In addition, the Cork facility was built specifically to help meet FedEx’s carbon-neutral goals by 2040. The facility is rated LEED Silver, equipped with EV chargers, uses LED technology for internal and external lighting and is designed to allow the installation of solar panels on the roof in the future. Optimizing European network Meanwhile, will play a significant role in the company’s European-optimized network. The gateway will incorporate a new sorter to triple sorting capacity and increase capacity for X-raying airfreight shipments. In addition, Stuttgart’s warehouse expanded from 800 square meters to 3,000 square meters to better handle freight and dangerous goods. The expansion of the air gateway is the second major investment by FedEx Express in the Stuttgart region within a year. In early summer 2022, the company opened a new location in Nufringen. This location offers improved express services through later pick-up times and significantly expanded capacities. “The expansion is further evidence of our growth strategy in Europe,” said Stefan Dries, vice president of ground operations in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. “We have invested in offering our customers in the region even more service and opportunities. FedEx Express is a strong partner and supports large, medium-sized and smaller companies to grow their business,” he added.
