Drone delivery revolution: Overcoming challenges and transforming last-mile logistics

Zipline, a company that uses drones to deliver medical supplies to remote areas, has seen a round of good news lately with expanding operations and a valuation reaching $4.2 billion.

Investors have been eager to be a part of the company’s growth, with Forbes disclosing that Zipline has completed its series F fundraising round for $300 million for total financial backing of $821 million. The company based in San Francisco has recently added three clients: GNC, which focuses on health and wellness products; Seattle pizza chain Pagliacci Pizza; and Associated Couriers. Zipline’s technology continues to expand with new offerings that allow for more precise delivery and increased automation in handling larger volumes of deliverable items for a variety of industries.

Zipline’s ongoing success reflects a cautious but noticeable expansion in drone delivery operations worldwide. Some of the key challenges facing wider acceptance of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) by the public as more commercial delivery drone services become available include public perception, regulatory structures and business model feasibility.

Last mile on the rise

As e-commerce continues to thrive, traditional last-mile delivery is projected to increase by 78% by 2030, potentially leading to a more than 30% rise in carbon emissions from delivery traffic in the largest 100 cities worldwide, as stated in a World Economic Forum report. Eco-friendly, all-electric, drone-based delivery options offer numerous advantages over land-based methods. Current delivery tests primarily involve packages that are small enough to eliminate the need for van or truck transportation.

Figure 1 below shows drone package delivery globally, with 2022 being an estimated number based on numerous reports. These numbers reflect a growing market in the sector, with drone deliveries estimated to double from 2022 to 2023. Figure 1 - Worldwide Drone Package Deliveries Source: Cargo Facts Consulting

On the surface, public acceptance of delivery drones is positive, with up to 60% of respondents claiming they would use a delivery service if available. However, it is important to consider that these types of public polls may not fully reflect the public’s perception of delivery by UAS. It may be difficult to accurately assess concerns regarding noise or misunderstandings over privacy that may be present in the public when asking solely about whether customers may find the service useful.

Perception alone isn’t the only problem facing wider adoption, and great care should be taken to examine the business fundamentals of drone delivery operations. Frequently, regulatory structures are blamed when companies face challenges in this industry, though a more comprehensive approach to reviewing business model feasibility may be required to accurately reflect risks to these types of operations.

Financial sustainability

Ultimately, the autonomous last-mile delivery business model has demonstrated its ability to generate positive cash flow and scalability. The financial sustainability of the model is made possible by autonomy, payload-specific containers and established routes between depots and parcel stations, far surpassing what a piloted drone model could achieve.

Amazon’s drone delivery project serves as an example of managing expectations and aligning business goals with the capabilities of delivery drones under current regulations. Amazon Prime Air has delivery drone pilot operations in both California and Texas that in their first month of operation served a total of 10 homes. Compared to the scale of operations of the online retail giant, this may be surprising.

Amazon has stated that it will work to expand operations through engagement with the FAA to remove restrictions on operations that make operating delivery drones at scale a challenge for the company. As of February, operations were limited to within 3 to 4 miles of Amazon’s operations which significantly reduces the viability of Amazon’s ambitions as long as these types of restrictions remain in place.

Walmart has stated that it has seen success with its drone delivery program, which now operates in seven states and completed 6,000 drone deliveries in 2022. The retailer has an advantage over competitors in retail drone delivery with about 4,700 stores in the United States; it has the footprint needed to support drone delivery operations at scale.

Walmart operates 36 drone delivery hubs utilizing three contractors — Zipline, Flytrex and DroneUp. Of note, the company claims that more than 85% of items found in a Neighborhood Market are under the 10-pound weight limit for drone delivery, and that some of its most popular drone delivery items include cookies and cream ice cream and rotisserie chicken.
