The leading freighter operators are Atlas Air with 49 747 freighter aircraft, UPS with 43 aircraft, and Cargolux with 26 aircraft. The se freighter aircraft in service are a mix of production freighters and passenger to freighter conversions.

However, currently , the only active Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) holder for a 747-400 conversion is Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) . In 2022 they were quoted by Cargo Facts stating that there are just under forty 747-400s remaining in storage or in service that are around 2000-vintage or younger, and which would therefore fall into the optimal range for suitable feedstock. Our analysis supports this claim, reporting report 37 available aircraft in the optimal conversion range. When considering the current market trends , it is unlikely that we will see additional conversion s in the future as more aircraft become available and some operators are retiring their 747-400Fs and even 747-8Fs, in favor of newer models like the A350F and 777-8F. A s aircraft a re retire d by one operator , they are quickly picked up by another. In March 2024, Qatar Airways Cargo announced the sale of its two 747-8Fs , acquired in 2017, to UPS. Given that these aircraft are only seven and ten years old, many are puzzled as to why Qatar would part with such young aircraft. Qatar’s commitment to reducing emissions, with the 777 producing 30% less emissions than the 747, is likely the main driver behind this decision.

Singapore Airlines is also reevaluating its fleet as the 2026 delivery of their first A350F approaches. Last week in Singapore, during a fireside chat at Cargo Facts Asia , Marvin Tan, Senior Vice President of Cargo at Singapore Airlines, indicated that they would operate a mixed fleet during the transition period until they receive all seven A350Fs. Factors such as market demand, maintenance costs, fuel burn, and emissions compliance will influence the timing of when its seven 747-400Fs are fully retired. Tan noted that the carrier has already received inquiries about their 747 freighters, suggesting there will be other suitors when it’s time to transition away from the 747.

Looking ahead, the future of the Boeing 747 in the air cargo industry appears promising yet nuanced. While the demand for newer, more fuel-efficient freighters is on the rise, the 747's timeless design and operational capabilities ensure its continued relevance in specific market segments.

Aircraft Volume and Cargo Door Comparison

We believe that one of the main reasons for the continued relevance of the 747 is its unique nose-loading capability, which newer models lack. Comparing cargo doors on various aircraft reveals significant differences in dimensions and capabilities. The 747 features a nose door measuring 104 inches in width by 98 inches in height, and a side door at 134 inches wide by 120 inches tall. The only other civilian aircraft offering similar capabilities is the AN-124, which boasts a larger nose cargo door at 252 inches wide by 173 inches tall, enabling it to handle odd-shaped or oversized loads that are too big for the 747.

Meanwhile, to compensate for the lack of nose loading capabilities, the 777-8F and A350F are in a race to enhance the dimensions of their main cargo doors. The existing 777F features a main deck cargo door with a width of 146.5 inches and a height of 120 inches. The 777-8F increases this height to 124 inches. Airbus has introduced what they have branded as the XL Main Deck Cargo Door (XL-MDCD) for the A350F , which boasts an unprecedented clear opening of over 165 inches wide by 146.5 inches tall. Airbus believes that these dimensions are ideal for accommodating ultra-fan aero engines and lengthy cargo items in a single entry.
