Growth and Challenges in India's Air Cargo Sector India aims to handle 10 million tonnes of air cargo annually by 2030, up from the current 3.5 million tonnes. Major cities like Mumbai, Delhi, and Bangalore, along with rapidly developing tier-two and three cities, are driving this growth. Manufacturing growth, fueled by companies like Apple and Samsung , is boosting air cargo volumes, particularly in electronics and smartphone exports. The pharmaceutical sector is also expanding, presenting logistical challenges due to the sensitive nature of some treatments. Transshipment potential is high, especially in hubs like Mumbai, Bangalore, and Delhi, but requires significant regulatory reforms.

India's air cargo sector is currently coping with multiple challenges, including demand fluctuations from key markets like the US and Europe, compounded by domestic hurdles such as taxing inconsistencies and inadequate infrastructure. According to the Airport Authority of India, there has been a 5% decline in international air freight volumes to 1.9 million tonnes for the fiscal year 2022-23, continuing into the current year. Adjustments in cargo strategies are evident in Indian domestic airlines, with SpiceJet’s SpiceXpress scaling down its cargo fleet and IndiGo adopting a cautious approach.

A major concern is the lack of uniformity in aviation turbine fuel (ATF) taxation across states, leading to operational inefficiencies and higher costs. Additionally, there's a pressing need for air freight stations to comply with international standards, alongside digitization and customs reforms, to streamline operations. Even though the Indian economic outlook is positive, challenges remain in the air cargo field, and we do not foresee a significant A321 market growth in this region of the world because of that. Enhancements and Operational Strategies Air India's recent acquisition of 250 Airbus aircraft, including the A320neo, A321neo, and A350 wide-body jets, will significantly enhance India's air cargo capacity. This increased belly cargo capacity in Air India's fleet will greatly expand the cargo handling capabilities within the Indian market. With these new aircraft, Air India can offer more cargo space on its existing passenger routes, potentially reducing the immediate need for dedicated narrowbody freighters. This significant boost in available cargo space across both short-haul and long-haul routes will likely address a substantial portion of the current and near-future cargo demand in India. As a result, the market for dedicated narrowbody freighters in India might not see an immediate surge, given that the expanded belly cargo capacity of Air India's new fleet could suffice for the foreseeable future.

India's domestic air cargo sector has 570 scheduled flights for the period of May 15 th to June 15 th . This extensive network is primarily operated by DHL’s subsidiary Blue Dart and its 757-freighter fleet. Lufthansa and Cathay Pacific also contribute to the total with their widebody aircraft services. The most active routes, such as Mumbai-Hyderabad and Mumbai-Bangalore, highlight the significant commercial and industrial hubs driving this growth. Blue Dart leads in capacity, followed by Lufthansa and Cathay Pacific, showcasing a collaborative effort to enhance India's domestic air cargo capabilities.

The following two sections provide detailed insights into both domestic and international routes, including operator capacities and key trends driving the air cargo market. Domestic cargo routes In the map below, the route data shows Blue Dart's destination and origin airports, with Lufthansa operating 18 flights on the Mumbai (BOM) - Hyderabad (HYD) route, and Cathay Pacific handling five flights on the Mumbai (BOM) - Bangalore (BLR) route.

The most popular cargo route is Mumbai (BOM) - Hyderabad (HYD), with 46 flights a day, shared by Blue Dart and Lufthansa. Blue Dart operates 28 of these flights, while Lufthansa handles 18. This route is in demand due to Mumbai's status as a major commercial hub and Hyderabad's significant pharmaceutical and technology industries.

The second-most popular route is Mumbai (BOM) - Bangalore (BLR), with 33 flights a day. Cathay Pacific operates five and Blue Dart handles the rest. The frequency on this route stems from Bangalore's position as a major IT and startup center, coupled with Mumbai's financial and industrial significance. International cargo routes Cathay Pacific holds the highest capacity for international cargo during the same 30-day timeframe, with a capacity of 28,000 tons and operating Boeing 747-400s and 747-8s. The popularity of the Hong Kong-Delhi/BOM/Chennai routes is driven by several factors: Hong Kong's location as a gateway between mainland China and international markets, coupled with its extensive air cargo infrastructure, makes it a vital cargo trans-shipment locale. Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) is one of the world's leading air cargo hubs, offering access to half of the world’s population within five hours of flight, and serving as a critical link for Chinese goods to be exported globally. The e-commerce sector in the region significantly contributes to the volume of air cargo. Increased online shopping has led to a rise in air freight demand, making routes to consumer-heavy regions like Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai more critical. The 777F has a similar capacity to the 747-400s, although it's slightly lower. When the shared 747-8/400 routes are split to account for unknowns, the capacity differences become clearer. Adding these differences to the individual variants highlights the variations between the 777F and the 747-400s.

The 777F is predominantly used on routes from India into and out of Europe and the Middle East operated by Emirates , Qatar Airways, and Lufthansa, with a capacity of about 36,000 tons. Meanwhile, the total 747 fleet capacity is approximately 51,000 tons.

The 737-300, operated by YTO Cargo Airlines and SF Airlines , accounts for approximately 8,000 tons of narrowbody capacity to China. Meanwhile, the 737-800 is being operated to Africa by Ethiopian Airlines with 1,400 tons and is also being operated by China Eastern Airlines to China at a 600 ton capacity. Remaining routes are populated with A321s operated by SalamAir to the United Arab Emirates at 1,000 tons, bringing narrowbody capacity to 11,000 tons. Hong Kong (HKG) reported an 8% YoY growth in cargo, highlighting the overall robust performance of China's key air cargo hubs, which are supported by a strong manufacturing base, expansive trade networks, and strategic investments in logistics infrastructure. Notably, major hubs exhibited significant growth rates: Shanghai (PVG) saw a 16% increase, Guangzhou (CAN) experienced a 15% rise, and Beijing (PEK) led with a 25% YoY growth. India's Air Cargo Sector on the Path to Significant Growth and Transformation India's air cargo sector is poised for significant growth, aiming to handle 10 million tonnes annually by 2030, driven by urbanization, manufacturing growth, and a booming e-commerce sector. The acquisition of 250 Airbus aircraft by Air India will significantly enhance cargo capacity, potentially reducing the immediate need for dedicated narrowbody freighters. The market is projected to see a 4.5% increase in air cargo volumes in 2024, with strategic investments in logistics infrastructure, expanding cargo handling capacity, and digitalizing operations being crucial to meeting rising demand.

However, the sector faces challenges, including regulatory reforms, infrastructure development, and logistical complexities, particularly in the pharmaceutical sector. Addressing these issues through uniform taxation on aviation turbine fuel, improved customs processes, and a unified digital vision is essential for operational efficiency. With strategic investments and government support, India is well-positioned to achieve its ambitious goals and become a major global export hub.
