CHAMP releases tool to monitor aviation emissions

Today, Luxembourg-based IT company CHAMP Cargosystems has released a new offering to help ease clients’ compliance with newly imposed emissions regulations.

CHAMP’s product, the EmissionsCalculator – available for airlines, shippers and forwarders – gathers data from clients’ usage of CHAMP’s digital platforms, broken down by flight or air waybill number to measure harmful emissions, such as  carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur oxides (Sox) and particulates (PM).

In calculating flight emissions, the service uses an algorithm developed by the European Environment Agency (EEA) – the body that regulates E.U.’s environmental policy.

The calculator is measured against the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA), which was introduced by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and agreed upon by 192 countries in 2016. It will not go into full effect until 2020, but affected companies have been told they need to monitor their emissions as of Jan. 1. 2019.

“While this is a requirement, we are sure this will give all parties in the supply chain the tools they need to increase fuel efficiency [and] streamline processes,” said Arnaud Lambert, CEO of CHAMP Cargosystems.

Data from IATA show that domestic and international flights emitted about 895 million tonnes of CO2 in 2018, which makes up about 2.5 percent of energy-related global output. Total emissions from aviation, however, have increased by 26 percent since 2013 according to CarbonBrief. CORSIA is in line with the U.N.’s goal for the aviation industry to make all growth international flights “carbon neutral” by 2020
