Air freight rates change constantly, and a tangle of surcharges, plus the fact that shippers deal with carriers through an opaque veil (the forwarding industry) makes it difficult for shippers to judge how well spent their air freight dollars are.
However, an about-to-be-launched air freight rate index, modeled on ocean freight’s Shanghai Containerized Freight Index (SCFI) hopes to change that. The project is led by Robert Frei, former head of product and procurement for Panalpina, and John Peyton Burnett, head of Kong Team Logistics.
