Cargo.one goes live in North America with 18 airline partners

Freight forwarders in the U.S. and Canada now have access to digital booking capabilities from major U.S. airports to 248 global destinations through Germany-based e-booking platform cargo.one. Photo courtesy of Finnair Cargo.[/caption] Cargo.one’s North American launch begins today and includes 18 airline partners, including Air Canada Cargo, ANA Cargo, Etihad Cargo, Finnair Cargo, Lufthansa Cargo and TAP Cargo, which are the first airline partners to go live, according to today’s release. Digital booking capabilities for Saudia Cargo and El Al Cargo are also expected to launch soon. While cargo.one’s North American operations will be based in Chicago, the digital booking company will have team members based in major cities like Dallas, Los Angeles and Toronto, Moritz Claussen, co-founder and managing director of cargo.one, told Air Cargo World. Claussen further noted that cargo.one is focused on localizing the product, which depends upon understanding local users and localizing the unit system. “We’ve had people on the ground [in the U.S.] for a couple of months to really sit with users and understand small differences in how they would use a product in North America versus Europe,” Claussen said. “That then trickles down into really small product changes, which make the experience so much better than taking the one-size-fits-all kind of cookie-cutter approach.” Chicago-based Nosta Logistics and American Overseas Transport were among the first U.S. forwarders to explore the platform prior to its launch, according to the release. Earlier this year, Texas-based American Airlines and Montreal-headquartered Air Canada Cargo were the first North American carriers to sign on with cargo.one to provide digital booking capacity out of Europe to North America. E-booking capabilities in North America will start with general cargo product offerings, which typically make up roughly 80% of the cargo transported, Claussen said. He further noted that the product team is working with airline partners to identify additional product types. In 2020, cargo.one launched a Passive Temp Control product category to all freight forwarders in Europe, enabling them to compare and book cooled shipments like pharmaceuticals in four varying temperature ranges. "It's weird that, even in times like the ones we're seeing right now, where there's so little capacity in the market, load factors are still not even close to 100%, and one of the reasons for that is that is freight forwarders don't have a transparent view of what capacity they can actually book,” Claussen said. “We've got North American freight forwarders telling us [that] it's great to see that an airline, like TAP Portugal or Finnair, is suddenly visible and they can actually use them into Europe, and they never thought of them because they’re sitting somewhere in Chicago." In addition to its North America launch, cargo.one is looking to establish services in the Asia-Pacific region with established partners and as well as new, regional carriers, Claussen said, noting that cargo.one has received requests from freight forwarders and airlines to expand into Latin America and Africa.
