Maersk bolsters airfreight ops with Senator International acquisition

Danish container logistics company A.P. Moller-Maersk (Maersk) intends to expand its airfreight operations through the acquisition of Germany-based freight forwarder Senator International, gaining a platform of own-controlled capacity and air cargo operations across Europe, Asia, South Africa and America. To build its own-controlled capacity network, Maersk has also placed a direct order with Boeing for two new 777Fs, to be delivered by 2024, and a lease order with Cargo Aircraft Management (CAM) for three 767-300BDSFs, expected to be operational in 2022, according to today's release. (Photo/Boeing)[/caption] Senator International’s current network of controlled capacity comprises 19 weekly flights with Magma Aviation. Those freighters are flown by Air Atlanta Icelandic, mainly between Europe and Greenville-Spartanburg (GSP). Cargo carrier Star Air, which is based at Copenhagen Airport (CPH) and part of the A.P. Moller-Maersk Group, will be managing and operating the gained capacity on behalf of Maersk, in addition to its own fleet of fifteen 767 freighters. Eventually, Maersk aims to have roughly one-third of its annual airfreight tonnage transported through its own-controlled network, according to the release. The company could not immediately be reached for comment. The remaining capacity not managed by Star Air will be secured through commercial carriers and charter flight operators, according to the release. Maersk also plans to explore sustainable and alternative fuels for the Star Air fleet and will look to work with carriers that offer sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) options. Since 2018, Maersk has made several acquisitions to strengthen its integrated logistics offerings . Recent acquisitions include U.S.-based e-commerce fulfillment provider Visible Supply Chain Management in August and European logistics company B2C Europe in October, according to past releases. Maersk follows French shipping group CMA CGM’s recent announcement that it will purchase two new 777Fs directly from Boeing for delivery next spring, joining its own fleet of four A330-200Fs.
