FedEx reactivates another MD-11F

Another MD-11F that FedEx removed from its fleet earlier this year has left storage to prepare for reentry into service as the industry’s peak season approaches. The 1993-vintage, CF6-powered MD-11F (48553) arrived in Singapore (QPG) on Sept. 3 for return-to-service maintenance after a six-month stay in Victorville, Calif. (VCV). (Courtesy/FedEx)[/caption] This is at least the third MD-11F with CF6 engines that FedEx has brought back from VCV this year, even as the express integrator said in 2023 that it intended to retire all its MD-11Fs by May 31, 2028. FedEx had thirty-seven MD-11Fs in its fleet as of May 31, according to its latest statistical book, released June 25. FedEx last month completed a similar return-to-service check on the 1995-vintage unit 48748. That trijet, which had entered storage on March 5, departed VCV on July 8 and flew to QPG after a stop in Honolulu (HNL). It then flew to Guangzhou (CAN) via Clark International Airport (CRK), Philippines, in mid-August. FedEx sent a 1993-vintage MD-11F (48603) to VCV on Jan. 23, only to remove it from storage April 27. Apart from the three aircraft that have left VCV, FedEx has parked at least seven other MD-11Fs at VCV this year. Only one, unit 48794, has PW4000 engines. Between March 1 and May 31, the integrator retired nine MD-11Fs as part of its fleet and network restructuring plan , Chief Financial Officer and Executive Vice President John Dietrich said during the company’s June 25 earnings call. FedEx also said that it had retired twenty-two 757-200Fs . Fellow integrator UPS is also phasing out its MD-11Fs , even after it won a U.S. Postal Service contract that begins Sept. 30.
