FedEx takes 50th 777F delivery from Boeing

FedEx has taken delivery of its fiftieth new 777 freighter from Boeing [ FAT 8998 ]. The production 777F (66263), which departed the Boeing facility at Paine Field, Wash., (PAE) on delivery to Memphis (MEM) today, began conducting test flights Aug. 21 and was spotted with a “FedEx 50” emblem commemorating both the aircraft milestone and the express company’s fiftieth anniversary. (Photo/FedEx)[/caption] Boeing delivered FedEx’s first 777F (37721) in 2009 and has delivered forty-eight more directly to the express integrator since then, including the most recent unit (66262) on Aug. 17. FedEx is the largest operator of 777Fs; it also has two 777Fs purchased from Air France and Etihad , along with three it leased from Titan Aviation Holdings. Qatar Airways is the second-largest operator of the type with twenty-six. Excluding unit 66263, FedEx is committed to purchasing four more 777Fs and has options for twenty-three of the type, according to its statistical book as of May 31. FedEx’s new twin-engine deliveries are part of the company’s Drive initiative to modernize its fleet. It retired eighteen freighters earlier this year and plans to retire twenty-nine more by the second quarter of 2024. The express integrator ended thirty years of MD-10-30F operations in January and revealed plans to retire its MD-11F fleet in five years as it explores options to streamline expenses during the market downturn. In addition to FedEx, the following carriers have added new 777Fs to their fleet in 2023: Air China, Atlas Air, China Airlines , China Cargo , China Postal , China Southern and DHL.
