Aergility Atlis UAV completes hover tests

Aergility accomplished a milestone on May 10, when its hybrid-electric Atlis drone prototype completed multiple hover tests. With those tests completed, Aergility plans to use a certificate of waiver authorization (COA) from the FAA to begin low-speed flight tests of thirty-five miles per hour in June for stakeholders including investors and potential customers at Marion County Airport in Dunnellon, Fla., Aergility told Cargo Facts . (Courtesy/Aergility)[/caption] Aergility intends to use its second COA, which covers ten square miles of airspace, to begin testing the Atlis at cruise speeds of 120 miles per hour in about three months, the drone manufacturer said. The FAA created the COA process to allow drone companies to apply to conduct uncrewed aircraft operations in United States airspace. Aergility designed the Atlis for the last 100-mile segment and expects to deliver its full-scale prototype in November, the company said. The dronemaker will turn its attention to developing the production drone to complete the proof of concept in Q4 2025, it said. Aergility has received its special airworthiness certificate in the experimental category for the Atlis and is working on obtaining the FAA exemption which will allow its drone to operate in national airspace, the drone manufacturer told Cargo Facts . The Atlis drone, which can carry 400 to 500 pounds of cargo up to 600 miles at 100 mph , contains a 40-cubic-foot cargo bay and is powered by a 90kW turboprop engine that propels six fixed-pitch, 9-foot-diameter electric rotors. With managed autorotation technology, the four upper rotors enable the UAV to perform vertical takeoff and landing, while providing lift in forward flight without the use of power from the turboprop, Aergility told Cargo Facts . Elroy Air , Tupan and Mayman Aerospace are among other manufacturers developing UAVs for the last-mile segment.
