Axon acquires airspace security company Dedrone

Technology and weapons manufacturer Axon this month acquired airspace security company Dedrone for an undisclosed amount. San Francisco-based Dedrone develops smart airspace security technology such as counterdrone detection, tracking, identification and mitigation technologies . The program helps airports protect their airspace from unauthorized drones. Aaditiya Devarakonda remains CEO of Dedrone, and the company plans to maintain all of its offices, Dedrone told Cargo Facts . Scottsdale, Ariz.-based Axon will integrate Dedrone’s technology with its public safety platform to enhance its drone-as-first-responder (DFR) programs and protect against unauthorized drone incursion, a Dedrone release stated. Axon’s DFR programs coupled with Dedrone’s airspace awareness technology, DedroneBeyond, will enable drones to fly beyond visual line of sight , the release stated. Lower airspace awareness With the acquisition, Axon gains Pythagoras 1, the lower-airspace-awareness solution unveiled by Dedrone in August. Pythagoras 1 combines: PyTorch, Dedrone’s framework for building deep learning models; A library of built-up and simulated data sets augmented by active learning; and Nvidia’s H100, a graphics processing unit. This solution can protect airspace against unauthorized drones and allow drones to navigate safely through a complex airspace, Dedrone said. Pythagoras 1 now powers all Dedrone products. Pythagoras 1 improves runtime over previous solutions, Dedrone said. It also improves precision on detecting all object classes and recall on most object classes. An object class is a grouping of objects that can be described by a common attribute. Targeted users Security or law enforcement professionals are the targeted users. Pythagoras 1 is part of DedroneTracker.AI, which nearly fifty airports worldwide use, including: Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD); Las Vegas’ Harry Reid International Airport (LAS); Perth Airport (PER) in Australia; and Newcastle International Airport (NCL) in the United Kingdom. Airports use Dedrone’s solutions to “quickly detect and identify nefarious drones while allowing good drones to fly,” Dedrone told Cargo Facts . Pythagoras 1 is an average of 20% faster than the video tracker Dedrone previously used and improves accuracy, which is “ideal for airports where split-second timing is critical,” the company said. The solution can detect nearly 600 individual drone models from more than 150 manufacturers, as well as DIY drones.
