Grid Aero completes prototype of autonomous cargo aircraft

Autonomous aircraft developer Grid Aero last week finished building the prototype of its Lifter-Lite cargo aircraft, making it ready for trials. “Grid’s aircraft is designed for long-range missions over water and is able to fly thousands of pounds for thousands of miles,” Grid Aero co-founder and Chief Executive Arthur Dubois told Cargo Facts . (Courtesy/Grid Aero)[/caption] San Leandro, Calif.-based Grid Aero did not disclose the aircraft’s payload capacity, range or top speed. “We built the pickup truck of the skies.” — Arthur Dubois, Grid Aero co-founder and CEO Grid Aero is developing the cargo aircraft for military use but plans to expand to commercial use eventually. The Lifter-Lite prototype, which took six months to complete, will move to ground test in the fall, Dubois said. Flight tests will follow once the aircraft passes pre-flight safety tests. Grid Aero, founded in 2024, closed its seed funding round in November 2024 with $6 million. The round was led by Calibrate Ventures and Ubiquity Ventures with participation from Commonweal Ventures, Boost VC and Calm Ventures, according to Dubois. Applications Grid Aero is working with the U.S. Department of Defense to adapt the Lifter-Lite to meet military needs, Dubois said. The aircraft developer has a contract with the U.S. Air Force . “Our objective is to flex around customer demand in the next iteration of the design, so we are staying flexible on payload and range,” Dubois said. Grid Aero aims to begin delivering aircraft to the military by 2027, he said. (Courtesy/Grid Aero)[/caption] The startup has no commercial orders for the Lifter-Lite but plans to expand into that market as well. “For commercial operators, it delivers low-cost, middle-mile logistics and enables distributed network operations,” Dubois said. Grid Aero’s autonomy stack blends traditional controls and AI , enabling aircraft to adapt in real time and minimize the need the human oversight. The Grid The startup envisions creating a scalable network of autonomous aircraft called the Grid. A Lifter-Lite fleet would be able to collect and analyze data from other aircraft in the Grid to adapt flight plans as needed in real time. The aircraft would communicate via line-of-sight links with nearby aircraft and via satcom with more distant aircraft, Dubois said. “Our mission is clear: Build the world’s most resilient air cargo network,” he said. There is no theoretical limit on the Grid’s number of participating aircraft, he said. The limiting factor would likely be operational, based on factors like fuel availability, he said.
