MightyFly to test new cargo drone in Michigan

MightyFly will soon begin test flights using the newest prototype of its new, fixed-wing cargo drone after being awarded a $150,000 grant from the Michigan government. Test flights will begin sometime after weather warms in 2024 using the third-generation prototype, which will carry test cargo for undisclosed customers, with flights originating from Alpena County Regional Airport (APN) in northern Michigan, MightyFly told Cargo Facts . (Photo/MightyFly)[/caption] The second-generation prototype, the Cento, was unveiled in January . It is capable of vertical takeoff and landing and can lift payloads of 45 kilograms at a maximum speed of 130 knots and a range of 521 nautical miles. San Leandro, Calif.-based MightyFly added that it has started production of the drone at its headquarters and must determine how many drones will be involved in testing. Meanwhile, Canada-based Volatus Aerospace is actively working with U.S. government officials to begin cargo drone flights for Detroit-based auto industry customers . Volatus is still working on a timeline for those flights, the company recently confirmed to Cargo Facts . MightyFly, for its part, said it has worked with the Michigan Economic Development Authority for more than a year on securing backing for testing as part of programs to generate urban air mobility business in the state. Other manufacturers, such as Virginia Beach, Va.-based DroneUp, have also worked with state governments for testing of cargo drone platforms.
