Primoco UAV to supply navigational calibration system for airports

Czech unmanned aerial vehicle manufacturer Primoco UAV has signed a $4.1 million contract to supply Malaysian aviation education company Giaan Group with a new navigational aid calibration system for airports as well as two One 150 UAV heavyweight cargo drones equipped for calibration. [caption id="attachment_56863256" align="alignright" width="300"] A Primoco UAV drone (Photo/Primoco UAV)[/caption] Navigational aid calibration services are required to regularly measure and calibrate airway equipment and operations to ensure reliability and cost effectiveness. “Every airport needs periodic calibration,” Jakub Fojtik , vice president of business development at Primoco, told Cargo Facts. Calibration is usually done via a multi-engine plane, which increases costs as the plane must be ferried to and from the airport, Fojtik said. The process is costly, “of which only [a] fragment lies in the flight calibration itself,” he said. Primoco’s calibration solution is used by the company’s One 150 drones, and has applications in the inspection, calibration and evaluation of a range of airport navigation equipment. “While existing UAV calibration solutions typically use miniaturized hardware that does not always handle actual transmitter and receiver data, Primoco UAV One 150 carries the identical calibration and measurement equipment as manned platforms,” Primoco Chief Executive Ladislav Semetkovsky said in a release. Giaan, which did not respond to requests for comment, will use the system to conduct calibration missions at airports in Southeast Asia. UAV offers flexibility, savings The One 150 will be a “game-changer” for the industry, according to Fojtik. “With our UAV we are using the same hardware and software as those manned calibration aircraft,” Fojtik said. “Our unique position is that we use the same equipment, not a miniaturized variant of it with reduced performance. Plus, the UAV is approved for civilian and military operation and can fly pretty much anywhere.” The flight calibration engineer who evaluates the data can work remotely, leading to cost savings, according to Fojtik. “This allows tremendous reduction of the cost — both investment and operational — with incredible flexibility,” Fojtik said. The One 150 has a Light UAS Operator Certificate from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency . “Drone calibration is clearly the vision of many air navigation service providers, but they lacked certified platform and certified flight calibration equipment for it,” he said. “We have both.”
