Speedbird partners with High Lander to achieve certification

Brazil-based drone manufacturer Speedbird Aero has partnered with Israel-based High Lander to provide traffic management services for its drone operations as Speedbird expands in Latin America and beyond. The partnership with High Lander and its unmanned aircraft system traffic management services (UTM) will help Speedbird certify its drone platforms, Speedbird told Cargo Facts. (Photo/Speedbird Aero)[/caption] The drone manufacturer was the first in Brazil to earn certification from the Brazilian National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) for its DLV-1 drone. The DLV-1 has a maximum takeoff weight of 12.5 kg, making the aircraft capable of delivering a 2.5 kg payload at ranges of 1.6 nautical miles round trip with beyond-visual-line-of-sight operations. Multiple drone platform certification High Lander’s UTM will allow Speedbird’s other drones — the DLV-2 and DLV-4 — to earn certification from ANAC and the Brazilian Organization for the Development of Aeronautical Certification, with the former certifying the drone itself and the latter certifying the route of flight, Speedbird said. The DLV-2 is a more robust version of the DLV-1, according to Speedbird, and is capable of delivering payloads of 6 kg at ranges of 4 nautical miles round trip. The DLV-1 and DLV-2 are propelled by six electric motors as rotorcraft, while the company’s DLV-4 is fixed-wing and vertical takeoff and landing-capable, and can carry payloads of 5 kg at ranges up to 21 nautical miles round trip. Expanding customer base Speedbird told Cargo Facts that it expects the partnership to enable expansion not only in Brazil and Latin America, but the rest of the world. “We are one of the only companies that has ongoing commercial operations versus other countries in which they have only a waiver to be able to fly,” a Speedbird spokesperson told Cargo Facts . “So, in Brazil, we are flying long distances of 25 kilometers transporting 8 kilos of cargo, extrapolated to the drone through the global drone market. It’s a big difference and is what I believe is putting us ahead.” The company utilizes dozens of drones to provide services for two primary customers: grocery delivery company iFood and telecommunications company Claro. It also caters to other health service providers, Speedbird told Cargo Facts. Speedbird said that it began working with High Lander two years ago, during drone exercises organized by the Israeli government to spur the development of drone technology . High Lander also recently announced a partnership to provide UTM services to Dubai-based drone logistics provider Dronehop. Speedbird’s commercial service and certification parallels Dronamics, which will begin commercial operations of its cargo drone airline this year.
