Brucargo Central boosts storage capacity by 30%

Brussels Airport today inaugurated the redeveloped Brucargo Central, an 83,500-square-meter logistics site that boosts storage capacity by 30%. The airport (BRU) replaced eight outdated buildings from the 1980s with three modern structures, totaling 34,000 square meters of warehouses and offices, according to a release today from BRU. (Courtesy/BRU)[/caption] An additional 10,000 square meters of temperature-controlled space brings the total cold storage capacity in BRU’s cargo area to 45,000 square meters. This extra capacity will support sectors such as pharmaceuticals , foodstuffs and e-commerce , the release said. Brucargo Central also features a multistory parking garage accommodating 500 cars, with an additional twenty-one spaces for trucks, optimizing access for teams and haulers. The site includes electric vehicle charging stations. Logistics companies at Brucargo Central The three new buildings will house five logistics companies, all already active at BRU, according to the airport: Nippon Express , which is expanding at BRU with a 10,000-square-meter airfreight facility focusing on the health care sector and European consolidation; DSV Air & Sea , which is investing in a 12,600-square-meter warehouse with a focus on pharmaceuticals; Hazgo , a Machelen, Belgium-based company specializing in solutions for hazardous, temperature-sensitive and pharmaceutical goods, that is moving to a 2,000-square-meter space; EV Cargo, a Hong Kong-based global supply chain company with plans to grow its footprint at BRU; and Deny Cargo, a Machelen, Belgium-based freight forwarder, that is moving to a 2,500-square-meter warehouse including refrigerated storage options. Airport growth In 2024, 733,000 tonnes of goods moved through BRU, representing annual average growth of 6% per year since 2019, BRU said. The 70 million euro ($81 million) Brucargo Central project, launched in 2022, joins other cargo operations improvements at the airport. Since opening in 2020, BRU’s Animal Care & Inspection Centre has seen about 10,000 mammals pass through its doors, according to a June release from the airport. The center earned IATA CEIV Live Animals certification in 2022. Brucargo West opened in April 2021, providing large, refrigerated storage areas and direct airside access. A 50,000-square-meter building provides space to Kuehne+Nagel, Worldwide Flight Services and Expeditors. “Accelerating the development of the cargo area at Brussels Airport is one of our strategic priorities,” BRU Chief Executive Arnaud Feist said in the release. Sustainability Wood was used in the new construction, reducing CO2 emissions by 1.5 tonnes compared with an equivalent concrete or steel structure, according to BRU. The redevelopment also reduced paved areas by 20% to create more green spaces. The fossil fuel-free site incorporated, according to BRU: Solar panels; Electric heat pumps coupled with geothermal storage for heating and cooling; Optimized water management; Improved indoor air quality; and Increased natural light. “Brucargo Central is a concrete illustration of our commitment to accelerating the sustainable transition of our cargo area and achieving our net zero carbon ambition by 2030,” Feist said.
