Canada invests $80M in air traffic efficiency

The Canadian government and nonprofit NAV CANADA will spend around $261 million Canadian dollars ($200 million) on three projects related to supply chain efficiency in air movement, including infrastructure and technology improvements, at four of the country’s major airports, with implementation and testing to begin this summer. The projects will focus on moving air freight and optimizing trade flows by addressing bottlenecks at the country’s airports. Designed to improve efficiencies within Canada’s aviation network and streamline airport operations throughout the country, the projects are scheduled to be complete by December 2027, a spokesperson from government agency Transport Canada told Air Cargo World. [caption id="attachment_57065984" align="alignright" width="300"] Calgary Airport, © Can Stock Photo / Leaf[/caption] “These improvements will help maintain the high level of safety of Canada’s aviation operations, reduce flight delays and positively impact the delivery of cargo and passenger flight operations across the country,” the spokesperson said. Tech, infrastructure improvements Four of Canada’s major airports — Montreal-Trudeau International Airport (YUL), Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ), Calgary Airport (YYC) and Vancouver International Airport (YVR) — will receive technology and infrastructure improvements in response to increased traffic demand, according to a release. “Delays at these hub airports cause cascading delays at regional airports throughout the aviation network, disrupting the flow of cargo and passenger flights,” Transport Canada told Air Cargo World . The airport project aims to reduce flying time and aircraft fuel consumption while increasing cargo movement and efficiencies, according to a recent release from Transport Canada. The airport budget is $77 million Canadian dollars, with Transport Canada and NAV CANADA contributing $31.2 million and $45.8 million, respectively. YVR announced in July it will implement a cargo community system (CCS) in the near future to improve its cargo flow. Reliability, safety improvements In addition to the airport project, a second initiative will add new technology to Canada’s air transport system to improve reliability, safety and performance under extreme weather and for remote communities, according to the release. The government will contribute up to $39.2 million Canadian dollars, and NAV CANADA will contribute an additional $59.7 million. Air traffic tech updates, drone management The third — and most costly — plan is to update air traffic management technology and add drone traffic-management services. The total investment for this is $85.2 million Canadian dollars — $34.5 million from Transport Canada and $50.7 million from NAV CANADA. The Canadian government’s National Trade Corridors Fund will also contribute $137.2 million Canadian dollars to other air cargo projects at Edmonton (YEG), Greater Moncton Roméo LeBlanc (YQM) , Halifax (YHZ) , Quebec City Jean Lesage (YQB), Winnipeg (YWG) and YUL, according to the Transport Canada website. Airfreight stakeholders have also increased operations in response to Canada’s cargo demand. Earlier this year, Maersk opened multimodal distribution center near YYZ and Air Canada Cargo expanded its freighter network following a historic year in revenue .
